Everton ponder audacious move for Chelsea defender

Everton have earmarked Chelsea defender David Luiz as a potential signing ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline for English clubs, claims The Sun.

The Toffees are desperate to sign another centre-back for the new season after losing Phil Jagielka and Kurt Zouma at the start of the summer.

Everton wanted to make Zouma’s loan stint at the club permanent but Chelsea plan to blood the France international back into their first-team plans.

The Merseysiders have discussed signing Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loan as an alternative but now Luiz, 32, has emerged as a transfer target for the club.

It remains to be seen whether a deal is achievable as Chelsea are currently serving a FIFA-imposed transfer ban and cannot sign new players until next summer.

Luiz also penned a new two-year deal with Chelsea in May to end any uncertainty about his future and it would likely require a huge bid to prise him away from Stamford Bridge.

Remarkably only Jorginho (13) made more accurate through balls than Luiz (12) in the Premier League last season.
