Madrid considering De Gea alternatives

Real Madrid are considering a move for Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero if they fail to land David de Gea or Kiko Casilla this summer, according to Marca.

It looks increasingly likely that ‘Los Blancos’ will have to wait until next year before signing De Gea on a free and they now appear to be sounding out short-term options following Iker Casillas’ departure.

Madrid have already had a bid rejected by Espanyol for Casilla and are reportedly unwilling to pay more than €4m (£2.81m) to bring the 28-year-old back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Rafa Benitez’s side have already been linked with a shock move for De Gea’s United teammate Victor Valdes this week, but now appear to have turned their attentions to Romero.

The Argentina No.1 is currently a free agent after leaving Serie A side Sampdoria at the end of the season and is alleged to be waiting to see if Madrid’s interest materialises before making a decision on his future, with Roma also interested.

Romero, 28, has been capped more than 60 times for his country, playing every minute of Argentina’s run to the Copa America final last month, but has only managed a combined 10 league starts in the last two years at Sampdoria and Monaco.
