Godin reveals real reason for rejecting Manchester United

Diego Godin denies signing a new Atletico Madrid contract and has revealed he turned down Manchester United for personal reasons.

United’s frantic search for a new centre-back even extended to attempting to prise veteran defender Godin away from Atletico on deadline day but the Red Devils were unsuccessful.

The 32-year-old has a £18m release clause in his existing Atletico contract and United were willing to make an exception to their recruitment strategy in order to land the Uruguay international.

It was, however, reported at the time that Godin’s representatives had used United’s interest in order to secure a bumper new payday at Atletico, but he has refuted those claims.

“I’ve not renewed my contract,” he told beinSPORTS. “I’ve rejected many offers to stay here, for personal reasons, but I have not renewed.”

Godin has all the hallmarks of a typical Mourinho defender but their shock pursuit of the experienced defender screamed panic stations.

Only Alvaro Gonzalez (245) has made more headed clearances than Godin (244) since the start of the 2015/16 La Liga campaign.
