Azpilicueta signs new Chelsea deal

Chelsea have announced Cesar Azpilicueta has put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year deal keeping him at the club until 2020.

Azpilicueta, 27, has been a figure of consistency since joining Chelsea from Marseille in 2012 and has even looked assured at the heart of Antonio Conte’s three-man defence this season.

The Spain international’s previous deal was due to expire in 2019 but the versatile Chelsea defender has been rewarded for his fine form this season with fresh terms.

“I’m really happy to have signed a new contract,” Azpilicueta told Chelsea’s official website. Since I arrived here my target was to progress as a player and win trophies. This new contract gives me the chance to continue my relationship with the club, that’s what I wanted and obviously I’m really happy here.

“We’ve had some really good moments so far this season. From day one, we started working very hard. We have a new manager with new ideas and I’m really happy to be working him. Obviously we can still improve but the long-term aim for us is to win trophies, that is what we all want, the players, managers and fans.”

With Azpilicueta’s Chelsea future secure, the Spaniard can be sure he features under in Conte’s long-term vision for the club. The Chelsea manager is reportedly still keen to strengthen his defence despite the fact the Blues have kept seven clean sheets in their last nine league matches since switching to a back three.

Only Erik Peters (586) has made more tackles and interceptions combined in the last four Premier League seasons than Azpilicueta (560).
