United defender set for surgery on broken arm

Manchester United have confirmed Antonio Valencia will undergo surgery after fracturing his arm in the Manchester derby earlier this week.

Valencia, 31, has been an ever-present for United in the team under Jose Mourinho this season and his absence is a real blow with United already short in defence.

Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling were also absent from United’s incredible 0-0 draw with Burnley, and Valencia is set to join Bailly on the sidelines for the foreseeable future after Mourinho confirmed the right-back would need surgery.

Valencia has completed more crosses than any other defender in the Premier League this season (12) and is United’s third highest rated player to have featured in more than one game (7.40).
