Neuer named Germany captain

Manuel Neuer has been named Germany’s new captain following Bastian Schweinsteiger’s retirement, the German football association has confirmed.

Schweinsteiger, 31, made his final appearance for the national team in a celebratory game for the Manchester United midfielder on Wednesday night and Neuer has been confirmed as his replacement.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper made his Germany debut in 2009 and has gone on to win 71 senior caps.
