European Team of the Season: CM – Nabil Fekir (Lyon)
We continue our run through the European team of the season and after ending the day with Kevin De Bruyne, we focus on his midfield partner in this XI Nabil Fekir.
The Lyon star was in fine form this season as he attained a WhoScored.com rating of 7.86, the fifth best in Europe’s top five leagues. He was a key man for the Ligue 1 giants as he netted 18 goals and registered a further eight assists to secure Lyon’s place in next season’s Champions League.
His outstanding performances in the final third haven’t gone unnoticed either, with Fekir attracting interest across the continent, most recently from Liverpool. If he can maintain his excellent form at the World Cup, then that’ll surely rise after the 24-year-old enjoyed arguably his finest individual campaign to date.
A return of 12 WhoScored.com man of the match awards was a third best in Europe’s top five leagues this term and that number would likely have been higher had Fekir featured more regularly, with injury limiting the France international to 28 league starts. It remains to be seen whether he’ll play again for Lyon, but they’ll hope to retain his services beyond the summer as they gear up for Europe’s elite club competition.
At the very least, they’ll look to command a top fee for one of their star players if Fekir does look to leave for pastures new after the World Cup. Either way, he’s enjoyed a hugely impressive individual campaign in France and very much warrants a spot in the WhoScored.com European team of the season.
