Messi makes Champions League team of the week for final time
FC Porto, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals in midweek and here we review the action and reveal our best rated XI from midweek.
Goalkeeper: Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain) - 8.58 rating
Keylor Navas proved himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the world in the last night's 1-1 draw with Barcelona to see Paris Saint-Germain through to the Champions League quarter-finals. Navas didn't have too much to do in the second half, as PSG improved defensively, but was world class in the first 45 minutes, making eight saves. He denied Lionel Messi from the penalty spot and produced several other dazzling saves to ensure PSG didn't suffer a repeat of their humilating European exit to Barcelona from four years ago.
Right-back: Juan Cuadrado (Juventus) - 10.0 rating
It ultimately wasn't enough, as Juventus went out to FC Porto, but Juan Cuadrado turned in a remarkable performance on Tuesday night to earn a perfect WhoScored 10 rating. Juventus' game-plan was clear, get the ball to Cuadrado and whip it in. The Colombian had more than 10% of the possession alone! Cuadrado racked up 156 touches of the ball by full-time and was certainly productive with them. He registered one assist from 12 key passes in total, three of which were big chances, while completing 15 crosses. The 32-year-old was denied a terrific goal by the woodwork, while completing all six of his attempted tackles to help Juventus keep the pressure on.
Centre-back: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) - 7.62 rating
There was no special comeback from RB Leipzig against Liverpool on Wednesday night as they were well beaten by Jurgen Klopp's side, but Dayot Upamecano at least enhanced his reputation after some tricky games against English sides in the past. Bayern Munich's new signing made seven interceptions against Liverpool, one shy of the record in a Champions League game this season, while also chipping in with four tackles and three aerial duels won. Upamecano also demonstrated his ability to carry the ball out from defence with two dribbles completed and made more passes than any other player in action in midweek (116).
Centre-back: Pepe (FC Porto) - 7.37 rating
While Cristiano Ronaldo flattered to deceive, his Portugal team-mate, Pepe, certainly didn't. The 38-year-old turned in a remarkable defensive display to frustrate Juventus, positioning himself almost perfectly every time the Old Lady attacked. Pepe made four tackles and interceptions combined, while racking up 18 clearances, 12 of which were headed. It was a performance that drew wide-spread praise, particularly off former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand, who implored all young centre-backs to take note.
Left-back: Marcos Acuna (Sevilla) - 7.10 rating
Sevilla certainly gave a good account of themselves and came very close to stunning Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night but eventually ran out of time. Marcos Acuna provided plenty of width down Sevilla's left and was efficient on the ball. The 29-year-old registered more touches of the ball than any player on the pitch (106) and notably completed 91% of his attempted passes. Acuna supplied three accurate crosses and managed as many key passes, while chipping in with four tackles and interceptions combined and as many aerial duels won.
Right wing: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 7.67 rating
Mohamed Salah brought up his 25th goal in all competitions this season to help Liverpool through the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday night. Salah was the WhoScored Man of the Match award in Liverpool's 2-0 win over RB Leipzig. Impressively, Salah made as many interceptions as he registered shots against Leipzig (3), having only made one interception in his previous seven appearances in the competition this season.
Central midfield: Adrien Rabiot (Juventus) - 8.75 rating
Adrien Rabiot's display against Porto will be remembered for his wild shot in the closing seconds of Juventus' Champions League exit but prior to that the 25-year-old was superb for the Old Lady. It was his bullet header that even gave Juventus hope, for example. The Frenchman had five efforts on goal and won as many aerial duels across the 120 minutes. He made three tackles and interceptions combined and racked up over 100 passes.
Central midfield: Sergio Oliveira (FC Porto) - 8.23 rating
Sergio Oliveira scored the goals that sent FC Porto through on the away goal ruling at Juventus' expense. The 28-year-old scored a penalty to put Porto ahead and then followed that up with a free-kick in extra-time. Not since Neymar against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 has someone scored both a penalty and free-kick in a Champions League knock-out game. Oliveira hit the target with all three of his attempts on goal, while also registering two key passes.
Left wing: Federico Chiesa (Juventus) - 8.26 rating
For Juventus to overturn their first leg deficit, many would have expected Cristiano Ronaldo to be the one dragging them through, but it was actually Federico Chiesa doing all of the damage. While Ronaldo floundered, Chiesa was a livewire. It may prove a changing of the guard moment for Juventus. Chiesa scored twice, doubling his tally in Europe for the season, and also completed three dribbles before eventually coming off in extra-time for fresh legs.
Striker: Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.38 rating
Erling Haaland barely had a kick in the opening 30 minutes of Borussia Dortmund's game with Sevilla but you can only keep the 20-year-old quiet for so long and he certainly made his presence felt with another brace, his fourth in a row in the Champions League. In doing so, he brought up 20 Champions League goals in his career, both the youngest player to do so and also the quickest, shattering the previous record by 10 games.
Striker: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 8.25 rating
Lionel Messi tried his best to inspire Barcelona to another big European victory over Paris Saint-Germain but it wasn't enough and he will be kicking himself for his missed penalty on the stroke of half-time. After watching Ousmane Dembele spurn chance after chance, Messi took matters into his own hands with a thunderbolt effort just minutes after PSG went ahead through Kylian Mbappe. Messi was in determined fashion, working as hard off the ball as we have ever seen before. The missed penalty was, however, a massive moment as Barcelona struggled to create meaningful opportunities after that. However, only one player from midweek registered more key passes than Messi (4), while he also had the most shots (7).
