Spain penalty hero leads top performers after first day of Euro 2024

 

Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy all kicked off Euro 2024 with victory and the four sides are represented in the top 10 best rated players from the first day of tournament action. 

 

10. Nicolo Barella (Italy) - 7.76 

 

Having recovered in time for Italy's meeting with Albania, Nicolo Barella stepped up to score what proved to be the winning goal in the Azzurri's 2-1 win on Saturday night. The Inter man netted with his only shot, and made two tackles and one interception in a solid showing. 

 

9. Federico Cheisa (Italy) - 7.78 

 

Remaining with Italy, Federico Chiesa gave a timely reminder of his quality as he shone down the right against Albania. While he was unable to contribute to a goal, it wasn't for want of trying as the Juventus man managed three shots and two key passes. An additional four successful dribbles saw Chiesa return a WhoScored rating of 7.78. 

 

 

8. Dani Carvajal (Spain) - 7.84 

 

Dani Carvajal followed up his Champions League final heroics with Spain's third goal in their win over Croatia on Saturday evening. The right-back latched on to a fine Lamine Yamal cross to tuck past Dominik Livakovic as La Roja got their Euros campaign off to a flying start. 

 

7. Alvaro Morata (Spain) - 7.85 

 

The scorer of Spain's first in their 3-0 win over Croatia, Alvaro Morata struck with one of three shots in Berlin on Saturday evening. Morata was also a menace for the Croatia backline having managed three tackles before his withdrawal midway through the second half. 

 

6. Kai Havertz (Germany) - 8.03 

 

Moving to the tournament hosts now, Kai Havertz both scored and assisted in Germany's 5-1 mauling of Scotland in Friday's Euro 2024 opener. Havertz's goal came from one of two shots and assist from his only key pass as the German forward landed a WhoScored rating of 8.03. 

 

5. Lamine Yamal (Spain) - 8.15 

 

Lamine Yamal made history on Saturday evening as he became the youngest ever player to feature at a European Championship. The 16-year-old made the most of his chance as he provided the assist for Dani Carvajal's first half strike against Croatia, that coming from one of three key passes. 

 

4. Michel Aebischer (Switzerland) - 8.35 

 

Moving to Saturday's early kick off, Michel Aebischer was superb as Switzerland defeated Group A rivals Hungary. Indeed, the 27-year-old was directly involved in two of three goals, netting with his only shot and providing one assist from two key passes.

3. Jamal Musiala (Germany) - 8.73 

 

The star performer against Scotland on Friday night, Jamal Musiala scored the second goal of Euro 2024 as Germany mauled the Tartan Army. Musiala rifled past Angus Gunn with his only shot, and the 21-year-old was a thorn in the side of the Scotland backline as he completed five dribbles and made two tackles before coming off to a standing ovation. 

 

2. Fabian Ruiz (Spain) - 8.79 

 

Fabian Ruiz provided the assist for Alvaro Morata's first half opener against Croatia on Saturday evening, that coming from his only key pass, before doubling Spain's advantage with a well taken effort in the 32nd minute. Ruiz also completed two dribbles on his way to a WhoScored rating of 8.79. 

 

1. Unai Simon (Spain) - 8.83 

 

With a WhoScored rating of 8.83, Unai Simon is the best rated player from the the first day's action of Euro 2024. Simon ensured a clean sheet in Spain's win over Croatia as he made five saves in Berlin, including a second half penalty stop to deny Bruno Petkovic.
