Season Review: Swansea’s seven-year Premier League stay comes to an end

It’s been a miserable season for Swansea, compounded by relegation to the Championship for the first time since 2011. 

Swansea changed manager two times over the course of the and look set to jump on the managerial merry-go-round once again this summer with Carlos Carvalhal set to leave.

Nothing went right for the Welsh outfit this season and their squad does not inspire any confidence that they can make an immediate return to the Premier League next season. 

SUCCESS - JORDAN AYEW 

There were few positives for Swansea this season but Jordan Ayew did look a cut above his teammates for most of the season.

Ayew can be pleased with his performances this season even if Swansea were relegated and it would be a huge surprise if he didn’t leave the club this summer.

The 26-year-old scored or assisted 32% of Swansea’s Premier League goals this season (9).

Furthermore, Ayew won the WhoScored Man of the Match award on six occasions this season, more than any other player in the bottom half of the table.

Unsurprisingly, Ayew finished the season as Swansea’s highest WhoScored rated player (6.91).

FLOP – RENATO SANCHES

It has been quite the fall from grace for Renato Sanches this season. After winning the Golden Boy award in 2016 in the wake of Portugal's Euro 2016 success, Sanches’ stock has fallen considerably.

Swansea appeared to have pulled off a coup when they prised Sanches to Wales on a season-long loan deal last summer but it’s been a total disaster for the young midfielder.

Sanches has only started nine league matches this season and it’s hard to imagine he has a future at Bayern going forward.

The box-to-box midfielder will certainly not be returning to Swansea anytime soon, but it will be interesting to see where he ends up at the start of next season. Unlike two years ago, there will not be an endless list of interested clubs.
