Bundesliga Team of the Month: Bayern Munich summer signing Coutinho included

 

Here we run through the best WhoScored rated XI in the Bundesliga for the month of September.

 

Goalkeeper: Zack Steffen (Fortuna Duesseldorf) – 7.52 rating

 

Zack Steffen has been a revelation between the sticks with Fortuna Duesseldorf and a regular feature in our Bundesliga Tem of the Weeks this season. The Manchester City loanee made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Bundesliga in September (21), including a penalty save at the weekend.

 

Right-back: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) – 7.65 rating

 

Achraf Hakimi deputised in the absence of Lukasz Piszczek with aplomb last month and slots straight in at right-back in our best rated XI. The 20-year-old was a threat going forward, with only two players completing more dribbles than the Borussia Dortmund starlet (11) in September, while also managing three shots and registering four key passes. Hakimi also completed seven tackles.

 

Centre-back: Salif Sane (Schalke) – 7.80 rating

 

Salif Sane was an unlikely goal source for Schalke in September, netting two goals in three league appearances for David Wagner’s side. Schalke inflicted RB Leipzig with their first defeat of the season at the weekend, in which Sane scored. The 29-year-old also won 16 aerial duels in the Bundesliga last month and made 10 tackles and interceptions combined.

 

Centre-back: Dedryck Boyata (Hertha Berlin) – 7.74 rating

 

Former Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata finished September in sensational fashion with a goal and WhoScored Man of the Match display in Hertha Berlin’s 4-0 win away to FC Koeln. Boyata registered a pass success rate in excess of 90% in two of his three league appearances in September. Furthermore, only one player made more clearances than the Belgium international in the Bundesliga last month (19).

Left-back: Marco Friedl (Werder Bremen) – 7.22 rating

 

Marco Friedl played a direct hand in two goals in four league appearances from defence in the Bundesliga last month (one goal, one assist). The 21-year-old was called into action in defence perhaps more often than his manager would have liked but he did not shirk his responsibilities. Friedl completed 16 tackles and interceptions combined across four appearances and made 17 clearances.

 

Right wing: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) – 7.46 rating

 

September was another highly productive month for rising Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho. The 19-year-old played a direct hand in two goals in three appearances and completed eight dribbles. Sancho registered five key passes, while impressively boasting a pass success rate of 91.9% in Dortmund’s final game in September.

 

Central midfield: Philippe Coutinho (Bayern Munich) – 8.24 rating

 

Philippe Coutinho has made a seamless transition to life at Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac has already hailed his influence. The 27-year-old finished September with successive WhoScored man of the match awards and scored and assisted in each game. Furthermore, only one player registered more clear-cut chances than Coutinho in the Bundesliga last month (three), while the Brazilian also ranked second for accurate through balls (two).

 

Central midfield: Suat Serdar (Schalke) – 8.21 rating

 

Schalke midfielder Suat Serdar scored two goals in three league appearances in September and picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award in their 2-1 win over Mainz. Serdar completed seven dribbles in three games, registered two key passes and attempted five shots. Without the ball, the 22-year-old completed 14 tackles and made four interceptions.

Left wing: Amine Harit (Schalke) – 8.60 rating

 

Amine Harit is the third Schalke player in the Bundesliga Team of the Month for September and the WhoScored Player of the Month. The 22-year-old impressively played a direct hand in the most goals in the Bundesliga last month (six), at least two more than any other player. Harit scored in three straight matches and won the WhoScored Man of the Match award twice.

 

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) – 8.17 rating

 

Robert Lewandowski has already raced to 10 goals in the Bundesliga this season, at least two more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues, with four of those coming in the month of September.  The Poland international scored in all three of his league appearances last month and his goals earned Bayern an additional three points.

 

Striker: Marcus Thuram (Gladbach) – 7.85 rating

 

Gladbach summer signing Marcus Thuram has endured a quiet start to life in the Bundesliga but exploded in life towards the end of September. The 22-year-old played a direct hand in four goals in Gladbach’s last two game last month (three goals, one assist), which earned Gladbach three points.
