Kimmich, Havertz and Werner star as Bundesliga Team of the Month returns

 

The Bundesliga's return was welcomed with open arms as supporters, old and new, were treated to a feast of German football last month. Here, we take a look at the WhoScored Bundesliga team of the month for May, of those to make three or more appearances, as league leaders Bayern Munich feature, so too do title rivals Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. 

 

Goalkeeper: Jiri Pavlenka (Werder Bremen) - 7.26 rating 

 

Werder Bremen's return to the Bundesliga started in the worst possible fashion as they were trounced 4-1 by Bayer Leverkusen. However, the thumping defeat proved to be the catalyst required to get their survival push back on track. Indeed, Werder earned narrow wins at Freiburg and Schalke, and picked up a key point at home against Gladbach, with Jiri Pavlenka vital in the former victory. The goalkeeper earned his first WhoScored man of the match award of the season in the narrow win at Freiburg as only two shotstoppers made more saves (15) than the 28-year-old in May. No goalkeeper kept more clean sheets than Pavlenka (3) last month and it helped him to a WhoScored rating of 7.26 to feature between the sticks in the Bundesliga team of the month. 

 

Right-back: Kevin Mbabu (Wolfsburg) - 7.76 rating 

 

The sole Wolfsburg representative in this XI comes in the form of Kevin Mbabu, who has been excellent from right-back since the league's restart last month as reflected in his fine WhoScored rating of 7.76. The Swiss defender has had a direct hand in three league goals this season, two of which have come in his last four league outings as he provided the key assist for Daniel Ginczek's late winner in Wolfsburg's 2-1 win at Augsburg and hit the back of the net in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Eintract Frankfurt. The 25-year-old defended solidly down his side of the pitch, ranking first for tackles (18), and pushed forward well, having completed more dribbles (12) than any other Bundesliga player last month. 

 

Centre-back: Lukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.39 rating 

 

The first of four Borussia Dortmund representatives in the Bundesliga team of the month, Lukasz Piszczek was solid at the back for Lucien Favre's side in May and was one of nine players to make a clearance off the line, that coming to deny Serge Gnabry in the 1-0 Klassiker loss to Bayern Munich. All in all, the experienced defender made 10 tackles and eight interceptions to help Dortmund keep pace with Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga and ensure he makes this XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.39. 

 

Centre-back: Jordan Torunarigha (Hertha Berlin) - 7.35 rating 

 

Hertha Berlin have been one of the surprise packages in the Bundesliga since its restart last month having earned 10 points from 12 available; only Bayern have picked up more. Vital in their impressive form following the return of the league has been youngster Jordan Torunarigha and that's noted in his fine WhoScored rating of 7.35. Hertha Berlin have kept a clean sheet in three of their four league matches while no team conceded fewer goals than the German capital outfit (2) last month. The 22-year-old was central to their solid defensive resolve as he made five tackles and three interceptions, while only a handful of players made more clearances than the proactive Torunarigha (19) in Germany's top tier in May. 

 

Left-back: Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 7.86 rating 

 

The first Bayern representative to feature rounds off the defence in the WhoScored Bundesliga team of the month. Alphonso Davies went some way to proving why he is considered the best left-back in the game as he had a direct hand in three league goals in May, scoring two, and he landed the WhoScored man of the match award in Bayern's entertaining 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Davies doesn't need a second invitation to break forward from left-back as only Mbabu (12) completed more dribbles than the Canadian star (10) in the Bundesliga last month to help the 19-year-old to a WhoScored rating of 7.86.

Right midfield: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.56 rating 

 

Of the five goals Achraf Hakimi has scored in the Bundesliga this season, two have come since the league returned last month. The Moroccan hit the back of the net in wins at Wolfsburg and Paderborn as the youngster again impressed from a wing-back role for Borussia Dortmund. Hakimi may not have been at his best in Dortmund's 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich, but he did enough in May to yield a WhoScored rating of 7.56. Six successful dribbles and four key passes contributed towards his inclusion in this XI. 

 

Central midfield: Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) - 7.93 rating 

 

Our Bundesliga player of the month for May, only a handful of players had a direct hand in more league goals than Joshua Kimmich (3) in the Bundesliga last month, with his only goal proving key in Bayern's 1-0 win at Borussia Dortmund. The midfielder spotted Roma Burki off his line to find the back of the net on the stroke of half time in a man of the match showing at the Westfalenstadion. Assists in wins over Union Berlin and Fortuna Duesseldorf came from nine key passes; only teammate Thomas Muller and Hoffenheim's Robert Skov (both 11) created more goalscoring chances than Kimmich in May.  

 

Central midfield: Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.83 rating 

 

Partnering Kimmich in the middle of the park in the Bundesliga team of the month is the penultimate Borussia Dortmund representative. Thorgan Hazard had a direct hand in a goal in three of his four league outings totalling two goals and three assists. All in all, no player had a direct hand in more goals (5) than the Belgian in the Bundesliga last month as Hazard excelled in both a support role behind Erling Haaland, and then up front in Dortmund's 6-1 win at Paderborn on Sunday. Hazard matched Kimmich's nine key passes in May to partner the Bayern star in the middle of the park with a WhoScored rating of 7.83. 

 

Left midfield: Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.71 rating 

 

The final Borussia Dortmund representative, Raphael Guerreiro has scored eight league goals this season, three of which were netted last month. The Portuguese star did enough to earn the WhoScored man of the match award in the Revierderby, that his second such individual gong of the campaign, as he shone in May. Forming a fine wing-back partnership with Hakimi for Dortmund, the duo are lauded as the best attacking pair in their positions in the league and for good reason. Guerreiro chipped in with six successful dribbles and three key passes, and was tough to beat too as he made 15 tackles and interceptions combined to help him to a WhoScored rating of 7.71.

Striker: Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen) - 7.65 rating 

 

The star of the Bundesliga at the moment, Kai Havertz made an immediate impact following the return of the league as he maintained his exceptional 2020 form. Indeed, Havertz scored more goals (5) than any other Bundesliga player last month as the in-demand 20-year-old netted clutch goals in wins over Gladbach and Freiburg, landing the man of the match award in the victory over the former. No player scored more clear-cut goalscoring chances than Havertz (4) in the Bundesliga last month as the youngster showed garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.65 and showed why there is huge interest in his services from across Europe. 

 

Striker: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) - 7.93 rating 

 

Another in-demand frontman partners Havertz in attack to complete this XI. Timo Werner narrowly misses out to Kimmich as the Bundesliga player of the month having garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.93. The highly-rated RB Leipzig forward notched three league goals in May, all of which came against Mainz 05 to take his total to six goals and three assists against Die Roten Bullen's Bundesliga adversaries this season. The German forward was unfortunate not to grab an assist last month, too, having made seven key passes in total to help make this team.
