Manchester United 0-2 PSG player ratings: Di Maria savours Old Trafford return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slipped to his first defeat as Manchester United and the Red Devils now have a mountain to climb if they want to stay in the Champions League. United lost the first leg of their last-16 tie to Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at Old Trafford and finished the match with 10 men after Paul Pogba was sent off.

Here we run through the full player ratings for everyone involved on Tuesday night.

Manchester United - 6.21

David de Gea - 6.30 - The Spaniard could do nothing to prevent PSG’s first two goals but did stop United from going further behind with smart saves on Angel di Maria and Kylian Mbappe

Ashley Young - 6.12 - Many will question why United handed Young a new 12-month deal following his performance against PSG. The United captain was fortunate not to be sent off in the first half for clattering former team-mate Di Maria and didn’t complete a single cross from six attempted.

Eric Bailly - 6.05 - Picked ahead of Phil Jones to deal with Mbappe’s pace, the 24-year-old allowed the speedster to roar between him and Victor Lindelof for the tie-killing goal. He only made one tackle and failed to make a single interception.

Victor Lindelof - 6.02 - Failed to deal with Mbappe’s pace on a few occasions and did not communicate with Bailly to prevent the Frenchman from sliding in PSG’s second of the night. His one attempt of the night drifted harmlessly wide from distance.

Luke Shaw - 5.92 - Looked unsure of himself at left-back, knowing the threat of Mbappe's darting runs in behind. He showed no purpose going forward and failed to find a single team-mate from his three crosses.

Nemanja Matic - 7.43 - The experienced Serbian finished the match as United’s highest WhoScored rated player but still struggled in midfield, often exposed with Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba further forward. Matic made five tackles and interceptions combined and completed two dribbles.

Ander Herrera - 6.65 - Herrera made more tackles (5) than any other player on the pitch but failed to influence proceedings further forward. The Spaniard had twice as many shots as any other player on the pitch but nearly all were blocked and none tested Gianluigi Buffon.

Paul Pogba - 5.36 - What started as a promising night for Paul Pogba ended in disaster. The 25-year-old’s surging run and ball across the box in the first half was the most meaningful attack United managed but he will now miss the second leg after being sent off with a few minutes remaining for two bookable offences.

Anthony Martial - 6.12 - Martial really struggled to get into the game in the first half before succumbing to injury and coming off at half-time. The 23-year-old completed one dribble but was dispossessed twice and wasted two chances for United to break.

Marcus Rashford - 6.26 - Failed to make the most of his big night, but was not helped by his team-mates. Rashford was forced to live off scraps in attack and was tightly marshalled by both Thiago Silva and Presnel Kimpembe. The United No.10 did at least manage to force Buffon into a save.

Jesse Lingard: 6.34 - The England international showed some promise early on and was clearly the main player transitioning United’s midfield to attack but picked up an injury and was forced off before half-time. Only Herrera had made more tackles of United players than Lingard (2) up until his withdrawal.

Subs:

Alexis Sanchez - 5.93 - Replaced Lingard just before half-time and turned in another absolutely abject performance. The Chilean was once again on a completely different wavelength to his teammates. He did not manage a single shots, registered no key passes, failed to complete a dribble and lost possession three times.

Juan Mata - 6.29 - Replaced Martial at half-time but was not the sort of player United needed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team were struggling for pace and Mata only slowed things down further. He tried his best, but it was not at all good enough to drag United back into the tie.

Romelu Lukaku - 6.08 - Was only given seven minutes to help United get a goal and only managed three touches of the ball. Despite barely getting a kick, he still managed to only complete 50% of his passes. United struggled for a presence in attack and could have done with him on earlier in the game, perhaps instead of Mata.

Paris Saint-Germain - 7.07

Gianluigi Buffon - 6.48 - Was a spectator for most of the game, only called into action to make one save in 90 minutes. The 41-year-old didn’t look particularly comfortable when asked to play the ball out from the back

Thilo Kehrer - 7.17 - United may have identified the 22-year-old as a potential weakness in PSG’s defence but the German did not put a foot wrong. He handled Anthony Martial with relative ease while he was on the pitch and was also economical on the ball, completing 92.9% of his passes.

Thiago Silva - 7.13 - The 34-year-old was a commanding presence at the back and snuffed out even the first hint of danger. Unlike Mbappe, Rashford never got to stretch his legs with Silva in close quarters. He always knew where there would be danger, making 10 clearances.

Presnel Kimpembe - 7.87 - Was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off and compounded United’s misery by slamming in the opening goal. He made five tackles and interceptions combined and completed three clearances

Dani Alves - 7.08 - No PSG player had more shots than Alves (4) and one looked like it was heading into an empty net before it deflected of Pogba and wide.

Marco Verratti - 7.16 - Despite not being fully fit, Marco Verratti ran the show in midfield and PSG will hope the injury he sustained towards the end will not keep him out for long. The 26-year-old unsurprisingly attempted the most passes (75), despite coming off with 16 minutes to play, and completed 93.3% of his passes.

Marquinhos - 7.09 - Marquinhos effectively man-marked Paul Pogba out of the match and that really enabled PSG to dictate the tempo of the match. The Brazilian, playing out of his customary defensive position, was magnificent alongside Verratti.

Juan Bernat - 6.70 - Was rarely tested by United and offered a useful outlet going forward. The Spaniard completed one dribble and tested De Gea with an attempt on goal.

Julian Draxler - 7.26 - Draxler was effective in patches but quiet for the most part. The 25-year-old won two fouls, registered two key passes and completed one dribble.

Angel Di Maria (man of the match) - 8.05 - Angel Di Maria turned in a performance at Old Trafford that United fans thought they would see on a regular basis during his short stint at the club. Di Maria loved his return to Manchester and thrived of the boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old set up both assists to kill the tie for United.

Kylian Mbappe - 7.68 - Was not involved in the game as much as PSG would have hoped but gave flashes of his frightening pace when given the chance to stretch his legs. He sliced through Bailly and Lindelof for his goal and should have scored another only for De Gea to read his chipped effort.

Subs:

Leandro Paredes - 6.07 - Was signed in January with a view to starting this match but replaced Verratti with just over 15 minutes remaining. The 24-year-old helped see the game out for PSG.

Colin Dagba - 6.18 - The 20-year-old was given the final 10 minutes and completed all five of his attempted passes. He also managed to complete a tackle in that time.
