Euro-star: Gyokeres' perfect 10 performance falls under the microscope

In the first of a new series on WhoScored, we take a look at the stats of one of the top performing players outside of the Premier League to keep tabs on the in-form performers across Europe.

Maximising our X account, our followers voted on the player they'd want to know stats on from the weekend's action, with Viktor Gyokeres pipping Deniz Undav, Alexander Sorloth and Niclas Fullkrug in the poll.

Sporting CP extended their winning run to six in fine fashion on Monday night. With rivals Benfica easing to a 4-1 win at Estrela da Amadora earlier in the evening, the pressure was on the Lions to make their mark when they welcomed Casa Pia to the Estadio Jose Alvalade. They returned to the top of the table in style.

Ruben Amorim's men romped to a resounding 8-0 victory on home turf in a statement win to reinforce Sporting's title credentials. Four Sporting players made the Liga Portugal team of the week and it was star striker Viktor Gyokeres who earned the player of the match award. Indeed, Gyokeres returned a perfect WhoScored 10 rating to mark his best rated performance of the league season.

The 25-year-old took his Liga Portugal tally to 15 with a brace on Monday night as he hit the back of the net with two of four shots. Gyokeres' two goals took him to the spot of the Liga Portugal goal charts, leapfrogging Braga's Simon Banza (14) in the process. In a dominant display on home turf from Sporting, Gyokeres was unfortunate not to add to his eight assists for the campaign having made four key passes in the resounding victory, more than any other player. Fortunately for the Portuguese powerhouse, his teammates' profligacy didn't impact the result.

The Sweden international again reinforced a statistically calculated WhoScored strength of 'dribbling' at Casa Pia's expense as Gyokeres completed two dribbles and he defended well from the front, too, as he made three tackles. No wonder Gyokeres has been attracting interest from Chelsea as the Blues consider their striker options.

Monday's performance saw Gyokeres land his eighth player of the match award this season and he reinforced his standing as Liga Portugal's best rated player with his average rating for 2023/24 now a superb 8.02. Gyokeres is believed to have a release clause of £87m in his Sporting contract, and with a few more performances like the one seen on Monday night; that could ultimately prove a bargain for any potential suitors further down the line.
