The only Premier League star to make Champions League best XI revealed

With football postponed for the foreseeable future, we turn our attention to the Champions League team of the season so far. Manchester United dominate our Europa League best XI of the campaign, while it's Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich who are the best represented in the top performing team from Europe's elite club competition. 

Goalkeeper: Keylor Navas (PSG) - 7.24 rating 

Kicking off the Champions League best XI, Real Madrid may have been prepared to allow Keylor Navas to leave for PSG, yet the French side benefitted from the Costa Rican's goalkeeping exploits between the sticks. His WhoScored rating (7.24) is better than any other goalkeeper in the Champions League this season as he kept a clean sheet in five of his seven appearances, that more than any other shotstopper. The 33-year-old's save success rate of 80% is one of the best in the competition, while he is the only goalkeeper to have won more than one WhoScored man of the match award, to help secure his place in this XI. 

Right-back: Juan Cuadrado (Juventus) - 7.39 rating 

The sole Juventus representative in the Champions League best XI isn't Cristiano Ronaldo, but rather right-back Juan Cuadrado. The Colombian has one goal and one assist to his name in the competition, those coming from respective returns of 0.4 shots and 1.3 key passes per 90, but it's his defensive work that has stood out. 1.7 tackles and 2.1 interceptions per 90 are fine returns for Cuadrado, who makes this team with a WhoScored rating of 7.39. 

Centre-back: Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli) - 7.43 rating 

Continuing the Serie A theme, only PSG and Manchester City (both 4) have conceded more Champions League goals than Napoli (5) this season with world class centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly vital to their solid defensive rearguard. The Senegal international has featured in six of their seven outings, returning a fine WhoScored rating of 7.43 in the process, with his 5.2 clearances and 2.2 tackles per 90 noting the proactive side of Koulibaly's game, two traits he maximised to good effect with Napoli unbeaten in the Champions League. 

Centre-back: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) - 7.30 rating 

Partnering Koulibaly at the heart of the defence in a top quality centre-back duo, Dayot Upamecano continues to shine for RB Leipzig. There is ample interest in the French youngster and for good reason with his WhoScored rating (7.30) enough to make this team. 3.6 tackles per 90 is one of the better returns in the Champions League this season, reinforcing a statistically calculated WhoScored strength of 'tackling', and a key reason for his inclusion in this XI. 

Left-back: Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax) - 7.57 rating 

Nicolas Tagliafico signalled his intentions to enjoy a solid Champions League campaign with a perfect 10 performance against Lille in gameweek one all the way back in September. Ajax may have dropped out of the competition at the group stage, but Tagliafico excelled as his WhoScored rating (7.57) suggests. The Argentine's 4.5 tackles per 90 is the third best of those to register at least 200 minutes of action in the Champions League to round off the defence. 

Right midfield: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 8.49 rating 

Lionel Messi may not be at his goalscoring best in the Champions League this season, as evidenced in his two goals, but an additional three assists helps push his WhoScored rating up to an excellent 8.49. The 32-year-old has been named the WhoScored man of the match in three of his six outings in European competition this term as he ranks first for successful dribbles (47) and sixth for key passes (16) to contribute towards his fine rating. 

Central midfield: Thiago (Bayern Munich) - 8.00 rating 

The first of three Bayern Munich players in this XI, Thiago has been his mercurial best in the middle of the park for the Bavarian powerhouse, as noted in his notable WhoScored rating (8.00). The 28-year-old has two assists to his name in the competition this season and has been able to glide past opponents with relative ease as his dribble success rate (72.7%) notes. Off the ball, Thiago has won possession in the midfield third more times (45) than any other player to feature. 

Central midfield: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) - 8.09 rating 

Coming into the XI alongside Thiago is Real Madrid's pass master Toni Kroos. The German star has created more goalscoring opportunities (22) than any other player in the Champions League this season, which has translated to one assist. A 93.3% pass success rate from an average of 86.6 passes is a exemplary return, with those ranking seventh and fourth, respectively, in the competition, and has seen Kroos yield a WhoScored rating of 8.09. 

Right midfield: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 7.85 rating 

Serge Gnabry has scored six goals in the Champions League this season, all of which were netted in London, including a wonderful four-goal haul in Bayern's 7-2 win at Tottenham. With a brace at Chelsea, it means the German has scored as many European goals as the Blues in the capital this term, with his sextet of goals coming from an average of 3.7 shots per 90. 2.1 key passes per 90 is also impressive and it's contributed towards Gnabry's WhoScored rating of 7.85. 

Striker: Harry Kane (Tottenham) - 8.08 rating 

The sole inclusion from the Premier League is Tottenham striker Harry Kane. The Spurs star missed the RB Leipzig last-16 defeats through injury, but put in a number of fine goalscoring showings in the group stages as he bagged six goals from five Champions League appearances, scoring in all but one of those five outings. The England captain was named the WhoScored man of the match in two of his five showings as Kane did enough to garner a rating of 8.08. 

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 9.20 rating 

Very much saving the best until last, Robert Lewandowski has earned an extraordinary WhoScored rating of 9.20 in the Champions League, that far and away the best in the competition this season. Four WhoScored man of the match awards from his six appearances is a noteworthy return for the Polish star, while his 11 goals is more than any other player. Combined with an additional two assists, Lewandowski has had a direct hand in more goals (13) than 23 of the 32 teams in the Champions League have scored to cap off this XI.
