Bayern Munich extend team form rankings lead after Dortmund mauling

Entertainment was expected when Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich faced off in the final Die Klassiker of the season but few would have predicted the outcome. Many billed it the title-defining match, in which victory for Dortmund would have all but guaranteed the league title. Instead, Bayern ran out 5-0 winners and reclaimed first spot. Dortmund froze in the spotlight.

Bayern were already top of our team form rankings in Europe’s top five leagues prior to their meeting with Dortmund but they have now increased their lead over second following the manner of their victory. Their closest rivals are currently Manchester City, who leapfrogged Frankfurt into second without playing.

Pep Guardiola’s side instead turned their attentions to the FA Cup and moved up one place after Frankfurt’s rating dipped marginally. Frankfurt have won their last six league matches but a 2-1 win over 10 men Schalke was not enough to prevent a slight rating decrease.

The Bundesliga side now face competition in third from league rivals RB Leipzig, who climbed one place after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Leipzig have now won three games on the spin in the league and are unbeaten over their last six Bundesliga matches, keeping a clean sheet in four of those contests.

Paris Saint-Germain missed the chance to wrap up their sixth league title in seven years after only managing a 2-2 draw at home to Strasbourg. Thomas Tuchel’s side were handed the chance to secure first after Lille dropped points earlier in the day but they failed to capitalise. PSG fans fear not, as the party has just been delayed rather than ruined. They do, however, drop down the team form rankings as a result.

Hoffenheim were the biggest movers in the top-10, moving up eight spots after their 4-0 triumph away to Augsburg. Hoffenheim have won three of their last six league matches and those victories have come inside their last four outings.

Barcelona and Everton are non-movers in the top-10 after respective wins over Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, with Chelsea rounding off the list, jumping two places after a 2-0 victory over West Ham on Monday night.
