Championship round-up: Swansea ace McBurnie the star of the midweek action

Another exciting midweek round of Championship action drew to a close on Wednesday and saw Leeds end the gameweek at the summit of England’s second tier. However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Marcelo Bielsa’s side on Tuesday night. Twice Leeds had to come from behind to ultimately snatch a point at the Liberty Stadium, with Oliver McBurnie the star of the show. 

The Scottish youngster has been in fine form in the Championship in 2018 and his brace on Tuesday night means he has now scored three goals in four starts for Swansea this season. McBurnie’s excellent showing in south Wales earned him a WhoScored rating of 9.36, with his two goals coming as a result of three shots. An additional six aerial duels won and three key passes highlights what was a fine performance from the 22-year-old against Leeds. 

Ben Alnwick was the second best rated player in midweek and understandably so as he churned out a man of the match display in Bolton’s hard fought 1-0 win over Birmingham. Relegation candidates last season, Bolton have hit the ground running this time around, picking up 10 points from 12 available. Alnwick was central to their midweek victory, with the goalkeeper making six saves, claiming three crosses and winning an impressive five aerial duels to return a WhoScored rating of 8.92. 

Rounding off the top three top performers from the midweek games is Bristol City striker Andreas Weimann, who, like McBurnie, also bagged a brace as the Robins piled more misery upon a downtrodden QPR side. Weimann scored from two of his three shots on goal, while two key passes and one successful dribble saw the striker earn a WhoScored rating of 8.90. 

At the other end of the scale, it was an evening to forgot for Stoke City and Ashley Williams. The pre-season Championship favourites have stuttered in their opening four league matches, picking up just two points so far, with Williams compounding a miserable 90 minutes at the Bet365 Stadium as they fell to a 3-0 loss to Wigan. The Wales international won only two aerial duels, failed to make a tackle and made just two clearances prior to his second half dismissal as he gained a WhoScored rating of just 4.34.
