New stars Haaland and Mbappe form star-studded attack in Champions League best XI
With the Champions League round of 16 done and dusted, now is the perfect time to highlight those that have hit the knockout stage running.
Here we will reveal the best rated XI from the last-16, with only those that featured in both legs considered for selection.
Goalkeeper: Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain) - 7.83 rating
Paris Saint-Germain ran out convincing 5-2 aggregate winners against Barcelona but did require a Keylor Navas masterclass in the second leg to ensure a healthy margin of victory. The former Real Madrid shot-stopper produced a series of highlight-reel saves to deny Barcelona and is a worthy inclusion in our team of the week. Navas ended up making 12 saves over the two legs, including a decisive penalty save on Leo Messi that really dented Barcelona's hopes of a comeback.
Right-back: Lucas Vazquez (Real Madrid) - 7.61 rating
Real Madrid weren't overly convincing across both legs with Atalanta but ultimately the fact they have much better players paid dividends in the end. Lucas Vazquez is enjoying a good season for Madrid, unexpected in many ways, and capped off his round of 16 performances with an assist in midweek. In as a make-shift right-back, Vazquez completed seven tackles over the two legs and managed three key passes and as many successful dribbles. Juventus' Juan Cuadrado misses out here as he only played in one leg of Juventus' defeat to FC Porto.
Centre-back: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea) - 7.71 rating
Chelsea supporters are seeing the Cesar Azplilicueta of old under Thomas Tuchel, with the experienced Spaniard playing a key role in their resurgence over the last few months. The 31-year-old turned in two solid displays against Atletico Madrid, as Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners on aggregate. He completed seven tackles and interceptions combined and eight clearances over the two legs, while blocking two Atletico shots to help his side shut out the Spanish side home and away.
Centre-back: Nacho (Real Madrid) - 7.32 rating
Certainly not the first defender down on the Real Madrid team-sheet by any means, but Nacho barely put a foot wrong across both legs against Atalanta. Nacho was asked to fill in for an injured Sergio Ramos in the first leg and then kept his place in the side for the return leg in midweek. The 31-year-old managed 13 tackles and interceptions combined over the two legs and even stepped forward from the back with three successful dribbles.
Left-back: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City) - 7.65 rating
Joao Cancelo has been a hugely important player for Manchester City this season, spending most of his time drifting in from full-back to central midfield to give Pep Guardiola's side numerical advantage at all times. He did that expertly from left-back in both legs of City's 4-0 aggregate win over Gladbach. Cancelo bombed forward with five successful dribbles, creating two key passes and was typically economical in possession completing 93.3% of his attempted passes. Not only that, but the Portugal international managed five tackles and interceptions combined to ensure City went through without conceding.
Right wing: Federico Chiesa (Juventus) - 8.26 rating
Cristiano Ronaldo was unusually disappointing in both legs of Juventus' elimination to FC Porto but Federico Chiesa stepped up and did his best to get the Old Lady through to the next round. The 23-year-old scored three of Juventus' four goals over the two legs and was regularly getting into goalscoring positions, firing off seven attempts in total. In fact, only three players touched the ball in the opposition penalty area more times than Chiesa (15) across all round of 16 ties.
Central midfield: Adrien Rabiot (Juventus) - 8.14 rating
Adrien Rabiot's performances against FC Porto will be remembered for his wild attempt at the death but it was because of the Frenchman that Juventus even had a fighting chance going into the closing seconds. Rabiot scored a bullet header in extra-time to set up a grandstand finish, having also set up Federico Chiesa's goal in the first leg too. He won seven aerial duels and completed eight tackles and interceptions combined across the two legs, while contributing in an attacking sense with five shots and as many key passes.
Central midfield: Luka Modric (Real Madrid) - 7.67 rating
When you have players of Luka Modric's calibre that know how to win the Champions League, you can never count against Real Madrid despite their seriously underwhelming form. Modric may be 35 but the Croatian midfielder is still deciding matches for Madrid on a weekly basis and was typically superb across both legs against Atalanta. Modric registered an assist in both legs and finished with a pass success rate in excess of 90% in each game. Even as he enters the twilight of his career, he's still putting a shift in with 10 tackles and interceptions combined across both matches. Modric had four shots and registered five key passes in Madrid's 4-1 aggregate win over Atalanta.
Left wing: Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) - 8.74 rating
Kylian Mbappe is our Champions League player of the round and it's no surprise after scoring four goals over two legs with Barcelona, including a stunning hat-trick at Camp Nou. Mbappe unsurprisingly had more shots than any other player across the round of 16 (10) and the Frenchman also ranked top for dribbles completed (14).
Striker: Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.64 rating
Erling Haaland ran Kylian Mbappe close for the player of the round award and is expected to rival the PSG frontman for major honours for the next decade. Haaland scored a brace in each leg against Sevilla to inspire Borussia Dortmund through to the next round. The 20-year-old netted his four goals from just five shots, showing a typical ruthlessness in front of goal. Also managing an assist, Haaland played a direct hand in all five goals Dortmund scored over the both games.
Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 7.97 rating
Robert Lewandowski scored in each leg of Bayern Munich's 6-2 aggregate win over Lazio and has now netted in four straight Champions League games after starting the campaign without a goal in his first two appearances in the competition. Having only completed two dribbles in his first four appearances in the Champions League, Lewandowski managed double that across both legs against Lazio.
