French side Lille the most in-form side in Europe

Here we run through the top-10 most in-form teams from Europe’s top five leagues, excluding any Premier League teams after their season finished nearly a fortnight ago.

10. Espanyol – 6.96 weighted rating

Given it appeared Espanyol would have a relegation battle on their hands midway through the season, they did remarkably well to finish seventh. Joan Francesc Ferrer’s side finished the season with three straight wins without conceding and unbeaten over their last six.

9. Saint-Etienne – 6.98 weighted rating

Saint-Etienne secured fourth place in Ligue 1 with a game to spare after wrapping up their fifth win in their last six league matches at the weekend. They strolled to a 3-0 win over Nice on Saturday, with their only blemish in their last six a 1-0 defeat at home to Montpellier the game before.

8. Roma – 6.98 weighted rating

Roma are non-movers in the top-10 but their weighted rating has decreased slightly after being held to a 0-0 draw away to Sassuolo at the weekend. Claudio Ranieri’s side are now unlikely to achieve a top four finish in Serie A, but are unbeaten in their last six, perfectly alternating between winning and drawing in that time.

7. Wolfsburg – 6.99 weighted rating

Wolfsburg have shot up the rankings after their stunning 8-1 victory over Augsburg on the final day of the Bundesliga campaign. They have won three of their last six in the league, which also includes a shock 4-1 win away to Hoffenheim. The margin of those victories helps them place seventh in our top-10.

6. Napoli – 7.00 weighted rating

Napoli have left Serie A rivals Inter clinging on to a place in the top four after thumping their rivals 4-1 on Sunday. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have overcome a dip in form and won their last four matches in a row, though have conceded in each of the last three.

5. Mainz – 7.00 weighted rating

Mainz are one of only two teams in the top-10 team form rankings to suffer a decrease in rating, which is due to the face their 5-0 win over Freiburg at the start of April no longer falls within their last six games. They finished the season with back-to-back wins, impressively defeating Frankfurt and then Hoffenheim.

4. Bayern Munich – 7.08 weighted rating

Bayern Munich are up into fourth in our team form rankings after wrapping up their seventh straight Bundesliga title with a 5-1 win over Frankfurt on Saturday. Bayern closed the season unbeaten over their last six games, winning four times in that sequence.

3. Lyon – 7.10 weighted rating

Lyon have rediscovered their best form at the ideal moment to secure third place in Ligue 1 and Champions League football for next season. The French side have won four of their last six league matches and followed up a 3-0 win away to Marseille with a 4-0 win at home to Caen at the weekend.

2. Bayer Leverkusen – 7.19 weighted rating

Bayer Leverkusen are the second non-movers in our top-10 form rankings but their weighted rating has increased from the last edition. The Bundesliga outfit finished their season with an emphatic 5-1 win over Hertha Berlin to secure fourth place ahead of Gladbach. Leverkusen won five of their last six matches to qualify for the Champions League next term.

1. Lille – 7.23 weighted rating

Despite knowing they can neither move up or down from second place in Ligue 1, Lille have not taken their foot off the gas in recent weeks and have been rewarded with some breathtaking displays on the pitch. The French side are the most in-form team from the four remaining active leagues in Europe’s top five, helped by scoring five goals on three occasions in their last six league outings.
