Newcastle Season Preview: Key Player, Signing to Watch, Predicted Lineup and Betting Tip

Newcastle are next up in our 2024/25 Premier League season preview as we look back at their 2023/24 campaign, pick out the key player, the signing to watch, predict where they'll finish and make a betting tip via oddschecker.

2023/24 Season Roundup

Struggling with an injury crisis and the balance of European football, Newcastle followed up their top-four finish of 2022/23 with a seventh-placed finish last season. Eddie Howe’s side were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage, despite a memorable victory over PSG. The Mapgies finished just three points behind Chelsea, who secured Europa Conference League football for 2024/25.

Key Player - Alexander Isak

After netting 10 league goals in his debut season in England, Alexander Isak exploded in front of goal for Newcastle last term, netting 23 goals in all competitions. 21 of those came in just 27 Premier League starts, with only Cole Palmer (22) and Erling Haaland (27) scoring more goals in the division. Provided he can stay fit for a larger part of the coming campaign, Isak could really challenge Haaland for the Golden Boot.

Signing to Watch - Lewis Hall

Though he may have arrived on loan last summer, Lewis Hall’s move to Newcastle was made permanent this July, and plenty will expect the 19-year-old to play a larger part this season. The former Chelsea starlet made just eight league starts last season, owing to the impressive form of the likes of Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn. This season, though, a changing of the guard is expected at St James’ Park, with Hall potentially heading into the campaign as Eddie Howe’s first-choice left-back.

Predicted opening day XI: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Kelly, Hall; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Betting tip

Though some might be backing Alexander Isak to outdo Erling Haaland, we’re backing the Newcastle striker to end the season as the Premier League’s top goalscorer without Haaland, at 7/1 with Betfred, via oddschecker (price correct as of 15:30 on 14/08/2024).
