Will Burnley break Championship records in Kompany's first year in charge?

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley are absolutely flying in the Championship; they are currently unbeaten at Turf Moor and sit seven points clear at the summit of the table. The Clarets are on a nine game win streak in the league and are picking up 2.24 points per game, which would see them fall three points short of the 106 points record set by Reading in 2005/06.

Reaching a points total of 106 points is no mean feat. The Reading side that currently hold the record managed to navigate a full season of Championship football only losing twice. Burnley have already been beaten on two occasions this season with losses to Watford and Sheffield United. However, with 17 games remaining for Burnley, and in the form the are currently in, you certainly couldn’t write them off.

Burnley have already scored 56 goals and at the current trajectory are looking as though they can notch 92 goals in this campaign. Man City currently have the record of most goals scored in a Championship season with 108, and it looks as though Burnley will need to ramp up the scoring a little in order to surpass this record.

With that said, they have made a couple of attacking signings in the January transfer window who can help chip away at that target. Lyle Foster joined from KVC Westerlo and Michael Obafemi joined on loan from Swansea.

In the first half of the season Lyle Foster has made 11 direct goal contributions in 17 starts in the Jupiler Pro League and so has joined Burnley with high expectation on his shoulders. No Burnley player has more goal contributions with Ashley Barnes, Jay Rodriguez and Josh Brownhill all chipping in with 11. Michael Obafemi has also been involved in a few goals during his first half of the season with Swansea, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

It is no surprise that a team mentored by Vincent Kompany is defensively solid, but the former Man City captain has got his side nice and organised at the back and the Clarets have conceded just 26 goals so far this season. Only second place Sheffield United have conceded fewer (24). Three of their defensive line make up their top four performers of the season (5+ apps) so far according to the WhoScored Ratings with only Josh Brownhill (7.36) scoring higher than; Taylor Harwood-Bellis (7.17), Ian Maatsen (7.05) and Jordan Beyer (7.01).

All the signs are pointing to a return to the Premier League for Burnley but whether or not they break records along the way is to be confirmed.
