Record-breaking Kane stars in Bundesliga Team of the Season So Far

As the March international break gets underway, and with just under a quarter of the season to go, we’ve taken a look at the Bundesliga Team of the Season as things stand. Included in our XI are players from Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart.

Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) - 6.96

Swiss stopper Gregor Kobel is the highest rated goalkeeper in the German top-flight as we head into the March break. The 26-year-old has the second best save success rate (73.3%) of those players to have made more than 20 appearances, while he has helped Edin Terzic’s side to eight clean sheets this term, only Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have kept more.

Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen) - 7.20

With eight games to go, Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremy Frimpong has already matched his goal and assist tallies from last season (eight and seven respectively), in what has been a sensational campaign for both himself and the Bundesliga’s runaway leaders.

Kim Min-Jae (Bayern Munich) - 7.02

After arriving from Serie A champions Napoli last summer, Korean defender Kim Min-Jae made a strong start to life in Bavaria, starting each of Bayern’s first 16 league matches before heading off to the Asian Cup with his nation. Since returning, the 27-year-old has found playing time hard to come by, with Thomas Tuchel preferring a defensive partnership of Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt. Kim excels when it comes to interceptions and blocks, averaging more per game (2 and 0.7 respectively) than any of his teammates.

Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen) - 6.98

28-year-old defender Jonathan Tah has proved a huge part of the Bundesliga’s strongest backline this season, with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen leading the division for clean sheets (13), while they have also conceded at least 13 fewer goals than any other team (18). Tah, who has been with the club since 2015, leads his teammates in clearances (3.3) and blocks per game (0.8).

Alex Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) - 7.69

The revelation of the season in Germany, player-wise at least, has been Leverkusen’s Alex Grimaldo, who arrived as a free agent last summer after he departed Benfica. The 28-year-old has looked like a totally new player under the management of Xabi Alonso, and having failed to score more than five goals in any previous league campaign, Grimaldo now has nine to his name with eight matches to go. He has also provided an impressive 11 assists, the joint-most by any player in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich) - 7.81

Speaking of players with 11 assists thus far, Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane takes the right-wing role in our Team of the Season So Far. The Germany international also has eight goals to his name and has completed the most successful dribbles (91) and created the most big chances (16) of any other player in the German top-flight this term.

Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig) - 7.65

After a sparkling season at PSV last year, Dutch starlet Xavi Simons has taken that form into the Bundesliga this time around, for RB Leipzig. The PSG loanee has been directly involved in 16 goals (seven goals, nine assists), while he is Leipzig’s highest rated player by some distance. Simons’ 64 successful dribbles rank only behind Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, all of whom join him in this XI.

Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) - 7.58

Having missed a sizeable portion of last season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Florian Wirtz has returned to play an instrumental part in Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title charge. The 20-year-old has equalled his tallies of goals and assists from the 2021/22 campaign (seven goals, ten assists), while he has also created more chances from open play than any other player in the division (58).

Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) - 7.79

Heading into the March international break, Jamal Musiala is Europe’s most on-form player according to the data, with an average WhoScored rating of 8.70 over his last six league appearances. The 21-year-old is another player on track for the best season of his career, with ten goals and six assists to his name at this stage, while his dribble success rate (60.8%) is among the best in Europe.

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) - 7.87

With a WhoScored rating of 7.87, Harry Kane is currently not just the highest rated player in the Bundesliga, but also across each of Europe’s top five leagues. The former Tottenham man has already broken the record for the most goals scored in a debut campaign in Germany, with 31, while he remains on track to eclipse Robert Lewandowski’s record for the most scored in a single Bundesliga season (41).

Serhou Guirassy (VfB Stuttgart) - 7.80

Second only to the aforementioned Kane in the Bundesliga’s scoring charts is VfB Stuttgart marksman Serhou Guirassy, who has fired home 22 goals so far this term - at least twice as many as he has in any previous league campaign. Guirassy’s exceptional record this season is made even more impressive by the fact that he has played just 20 of the 26 possible matches; his rate of scoring - every 68.1 minutes - is the best of any player across Europe’s top five leagues (1000+ minutes played).
