Revealed: Ronaldo and Messi are not most prolific goalscorers in Europe

Here we run through the top-10 most prolific goalscorers in Europe's top 5 leagues this season. Players must have made at least 10 appearances in their respective league to be eligible.

10. Mauro Icardi (PSG) - One goal every 107.7 minutes of action

Mauro Icardi's loan switch from Inter to Paris Saint-Germain has benefitted all parties. Inter are flourishing with Romelu Lukaku up front, while Icardi has settled well in the French capital. Icardi is only two league goals shy of matching his tally from the entirety of last season for Inter (11), doing so in only 14 Ligue 1 appearances. His record in front of goal would have been even more impressive but for his current run of three league games without a goal.

9. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - One goal every 96.4 minutes of action

Lionel Messi's campaign has been disrupted by injury, change of manager and the loss of Luis Suarez. Nevertheless, the Barcelona superstar has still managed to score at least two more goals than any other player in LaLiga this term (14). Messi has netted 14 times from 16 league apperances and has picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match in half of those games. He has netted two hat-tricks in the league this season but has only scored twice in his last six league outings.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) - One goal every 93.2 minutes of action

Cristiano Ronaldo has bulldozed his way into the top-10 after hitting the best goalscoring form of his Juventus career. The 34-year-old has scored 17 goals in 18 league appearances this season, helped entirely by his current scoring streak of eight games. Ronaldo has netted 12 goals in that time and scored his first Serie A treble for the club in a 4-0 win over Cagliari. Ronaldo had only scored five times in his 10 appearances prior to that run.

7. Josip Ilicic (Atalanta) - One goal every 90 minutes of action

Josip Ilicic has been one of the surprise packages in Europe's top five leagues this season and it's a surprise there have been no suitors willing to test Atalanta's resolve this month. Helped by the fact Ilicic has only completed 90 minutes on six occasions this season, the 32-year-old ranks number seven in our list with 13 goals in 17 league appearances. Ilicic scored a treble in Atalanta's last league match and remarkably has a perfect WhoScored 10 rating in three of his last five league appearances.

6. Neymar (PSG) - One goal every 87.8 minutes of action

It's taken a while for Paris Saint-Germain supporters to see Neymar out on the pitch this season but it certainly hasn't take long for the Brazilian to hit top form. Neymar is scoring at a goal-per-game ratio (13 in 13) and has netted in each of his last seven league outings. In fact, the 27-year-old has failed to score in just two league matches this season and has claimed the WhoScored Man of the Match award seven times already.

5. Kylian Mbappe (PSG) - One goal every 83.5 minutes of action

Neymar is beaten in the standings by his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate, Kylian Mbappe. The fact Neymar and Mbappe have started just 13 and 12 league matches, respectively, this season is a huge problem for the Ligue 1 giants. Nevertheless, Mbappe has returned 13 goals in 15 league appearances overall this season. He has scored braces in four matches and has failed to net in just two of his last seven league outings.

4. Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) - One goal every 80.3 minutes of action

Robert Lewandowski's start to the season has seen Timo Werner's goalscoring form fly slightly under the radar. Werner has 20 goals in 19 league appearances so far this season, four more than he managed across the whole of 2018/19. In fact, Werner only needs to score one goal from RB Leipzig's remaining 15 league games to match his best every haul in a league campaign. A summer move to one of Europe's biggest clubs is on the cards for the Germany international.

3. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - One goal every 80.1 minutes of action

Most players take their time before hitting top gear at the start of the season. But not Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich striker scored in each of his first 11 league appearances this term, netting 16 goals in the process. It's testament to Timo Werner's own form that he is the outright scorer in the Bundesliga this season by just a single goal.

2. Ciro Immobile (Lazio) - One goal every 71.8 minutes of action

Ciro Immobile has been unstoppable in front of goal this season. The 29-year-old is the top scorer in Europe's top five leagues with 23 goals in 20 league appearances. The Lazio striker scored in nine league matches in a row and has particularly enjoyed playing Sampdoria this term, with five goals in two encounters.

1. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) - One goal every 69.4 minutes of action

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has conceded it will be impossible to find a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero, who is nearing the end of his time at the club. Guardiola is right. Aguero has the best minutes-per-goal in Europe's top five leagues this season but injuries have once again meant City have not been able to field the Argentine as much as they would like. Aguero started the season by scoring in each of City's first six league matches and is currently on goalscoring run of four games in the competition.
