Man Utd star back to his best in Premier League Best XI alongside Liverpool duo
After a midweek round of fixtures with some eye-catching results and performances across the board, our latest Premier League best XI includes two representatives from league leaders Liverpool and a Manchester United star looking back to his very best.
Nick Pope (Burnley) - 8.36
Following a fifth clean sheet in his last eight league appearances, picking up the WhoScored man of the match award in all five, Pope gets the nod in goal again. The England international produced six saves in total against a Villa onslaught, the best of which saw him tip an excellent Anwar El Ghazi free-kick onto the crossbar.
Vladimir Coufal (West Ham) - 8.36
It's fair to say most West Ham fans will have known very little about Coufal prior to his signing just before the transfer deadline but the Czech international is already a fan favourite. His cross teed up Sebastien Haller's goal of the season contender against Palace in midweek, which was one of four key passes having also produced five tackles in the stalemate.
Adam Webster (Brighton) - 8.19
Returning to the side having been somewhat surprisingly dropped against Leicester last weekend, Webster's display at Fulham should ensure Graham Potter thinks twice before leaving him out again. The centre-back made a crucial last man tackle shortly after half time and hit the woodwork just moments later, whilst recording match high figures for aerial duels won (six) and interceptions (five).
James Tarkowski (Burnley) - 7.71
Part of a Burnley backline that threw their bodies on the line in front of a barrage of Aston Villa shots, Tarkowski made five clearances, won four tackles and produced three interceptions to keep their hosts at bay.
Ezgjan Alioski (Leeds) - 8.01
Having had to bide his time for a start in the Premier League, the versatile Alioski has been a mainstay of late and notched his first ever goal in the top-flight as Leeds killed Newcastle off on the counter on Wednesday. It capped a well rounded display from the Macedonian, who created two chances, completed two dribbles and produced two tackles in a 5-2 win.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 8.17
Scoring for the fourth game running for the Reds, albeit via a very fortuitous deflection, Salah was a constant threat against Tottenham and put in an excellent defensive shift to boot. The Egyptian had four shots in total and produced two tackles in the crucial clash at the top of the table.
Ilkay Gundogan (Man City) - 8.04
Another player left out of the side last weekend, Gundogan provided a much needed thrust to the Manchester City midfield that was lacking in the derby, even if Pep Guardiola's side could only manage a point against lowly West Brom. The German opened the scoring with a tidy finish and completed 45 passes into the final third - a record in a Premier League game this season.
Daniel Podence (Wolves) - 7.98
Notching a superb strike to set up Wolves comeback win over Chelsea, Podence was a real menace to the Blues all evening on Tuesday and continues to impress having become a regular feature in the side since Diogo Jota's departure. The pocket-sized Portuguese completed six dribbles in the 2-1 victory, as well as three tackles and interceptions combined.
Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) - 8.85
It was perhaps the first sight of Marcus Rashford at his blistering best in the league this season at Brammall Lane, with the England international causing havoc in the Sheffield United defence. Scoring twice from five shots, Rashford's first was a stunning touch and strike and he also completed four dribbles and 87.1 per cent of his passes as United came from behind, again.
David McGoldrick (Sheffield United) - 8.99
The second player to bag a brace on Thursday night, McGoldrick certainly picks his opponents in the Premier League, with a modest six goals since the start of last season all scored against United, Chelsea and Arsenal. The 33-year-old attempted five shots in total, won four aerial duels, created two chances and completed two dribbles.
Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) - 8.47
He may have struggled for goals stretching back to the start of last season, but you wouldn't have known it from the ferocity of Firmino's headed match winner against Spurs. The Brazilian continued an impressive record against the Londoners, with a fourth goal in his last five appearances against them, attempting five shots in all, as well as creating two chances and completing two dribbles.
