Championship 2019/20 Round-up: Best signing, biggest flop and team of the season

The Championship regular season concluded on Wednesday night with drama at both ends of the table.

As all three teams capable of finishing failed to win, West Brom clinched  the final autmatic promotion spot with a 2-2 draw at home to Queens Park Rangers, leaving Fulham and Brentford to slug it out in the play-offs.

While the aforementioned duo still have something to fight for, that is not the case for Wigan and Charlton, who both suffered relegation heartache on the final day. A 1-1 draw with Fulham was not good enough for Wigan to leave the bottom three after their controversial 12-point deduction for entering administration.

The final day was perhaps even more cruel for Charlton, who saw their Championship status taken from them after Barnsley scored an unlikely 96th-minute winner away to Brentford.

Before turning our attention to the play-offs, it's time to round-up the regular season by revealing the best rated player, best signing, best youngster, biggest flop and our team of the season.

Best Rated Player: Said Benrahma (Brentford) - 7.51 rating

It will come as no susprise to many that Brentford's Said Benrahma is our Championship Player of the Season. The 24-year-old looks destined for the Premier League regardless of whether Brentford go up through the play-offs or not.

Benrahma played a direct hand in 25 goals in 43 league appearances for the Bees (17 goals, eight assists) and was one of just three players to reach double figures for WhoScored Man of the Match awards (10). Benrahma ranked in the division first for shots on target (64), second for successful dribbles (132) and in the top five for chances created (91).

Best Signing: Matheus Pereira (West Brom) - 7.41 rating

While Matheus Pereira will be in the Premier League with West Brom next season you get the feeling the Baggies will struggle to hold on to the 24-year-old beyond the 2020/21 campaign. Initially signed on loan from Sporting, Slaven Bilic's side wisely got a permanent deal over the line in June.

Pereira was the Championship's most creative player this season, registering 16 assists and ranking top for both key passes registered (116) and clear-cut goalscoring chances created (20). The Brazilian playmaker also weighed in with eight goals for West Brom and it will be hugely exciting to see how he fares in the Premier League next season.

Best Youngster: Eberechi Eze (QPR) - 7.36 rating

It's not even been 24 hours since the Championship season finished yet Premier League sides are wasting no time lining up Eberechi Eze for a summer transfer. Crystal Palace have already been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old, while Championship winners Leeds are now keen.

Eze impressively played a direct hand in 32.8% of QPR's league goals this season in his second full campaign for the Super Hoops. The England Under-21 international scored 14 goals and supplied eight assists in 46 league appearances and completed more dribbles than any other player in the division (136).

Biggest Flop: Jack Butland - 6.21 rating

A lot can change in the space of 12 months and Jack Butland's stock has hit rock bottom in that time. It was only last summer the Stoke No.1 was being lined up by Aston Villa in a £30m deal but he now he will even be lucky to scrape a Premier League return.

Of players that started at least 30 Championship matches this season, Butland garnered the lowest WhoScored rating in the division (6.21). Butland managed just nine clean sheets from his 35 league appearances for the Potters and had the second worst save success rate in the division (56.8%), of goalkeepers with more than 20 appearances to their name.
