Copa America Group B top performers - Clean sweep for Colombia

 

Colombia’s 1-0 win over Paraguay saw them progress to the next round of the Copa America as group winners as the won all three group games, scoring four and conceding none, while Argentina scraped through in second to set up a first knockout stage meeting with Venezuela. 

 

It’s little surprise then that they dominate the best XI from Group B, with no fewer than eight players making the grade… 

 

5. Davinson Sanchez (Colombia) - 7.34 

 

Colombia’s place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America was already confirmed by the time they took on Paraguay, with head coach Carlos Queiroz able to rest key players in the narrow win. As such, it meant a number of regular starts will be fresh for the knockout stages, with Davinson Sanchez one of those dropping out. The Tottenham defender found a teammate with 89.6% of his 106 passes in the group stages, while four tackles and seven clearances saw him earn the fifth best rating (7.34) of all players in Group B. 

 

4. David Ospina (Colombia) - 7.39  

 

David Ospina kept clean sheets in wins over Argentina and Qatar and was, like Sanchez, rested for their victory over Paraguay. Nevertheless, the experienced Napoli shotstopper was in good form in the two games as he made eight accurate long balls and returned a pass success rate of 85% across his two outings. Eight saves, the second highest in Group B, saw him land a WhoScored rating of 7.39.

3. William Tesillo (Colombia) - 7.42 

 

Podiuming in the top rated players countdown is left-back William Tesillo, who pushed forward well from defence to feature in this ranking. The 29-year-old completed six dribbles across his two appearances in the group stages as he aimed to stretch opponents, and he was defensively solid too as he made two tackles and three interceptions. 

 

2. Roger Martinez (Colombia) - 7.56 

 

Roger Martinez was an early introduction in Colombia’s 2-0 win over Argentina as he replaced Luis Muriel inside 15 minutes and wasted no time in staking a claim for a regular spot. He put in a man of the match display against Argentina, notching their first goal in the victory, and was solid in the 1-0 win over Qatar. Additional returns of five successful dribbles and four key passes saw him return a WhoScored rating of 7.56.

1. James Rodriguez (Colombia) - 7.76 

 

Ensuring a Colombia clean sweep in the top player rankings, James Rodriguez earned the player of the group award with a fine WhoScored rating of 7.76. He provided two assists in the group stages and made more key passes (12) than any other player in Group B. Five clear-cut goalscoring chances created was also the most in the group as Rodriguez gave another glimpse of his quality ahead of a summer where he is expected to move on from Real Madrid. He'll have no shortage of suitors if his Copa America performances are anything to go by...
