Lewandowski leads Bayern contingent in Bundesliga best XI

It's rumoured that the Bundesliga will return to action in early May as Bayern Munich seek to successfully defend their crown. They face competition from Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Gladbach, who all feature in the Bundesliga team of the season far...

Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer (Gladbach) - 6.86 rating

A key reason for Gladbach's excellent season to date has been the performances of Yann Sommer between the sticks for the Foals. Only Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig (both 26) have conceded fewer goals than Gladbach (30) in Germany's top tier this term with the Swiss shotstopper vital having made more saves (89) than any other goalkeeper. The 31-year-old also boasts a better save success rate (76.5%) than any other Bundesliga goalkeeper to help yield a WhoScored rating of 6.86.

Right-back: Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin) - 7.22 rating

The only player outside the Bundesliga's top four to make this XI is Union Berlin's Christopher Trimmel with a WhoScored rating of 7.22. The newly-promoted side have exceeded expectations in their debut campaign in Germany's top tier with the vastly experienced Trimmel superb from right-back. Indeed, the 33-year-old has seven assists to his name this season as he pushed forward well from defence to feature.

Centre-back: Marcel Halstenberg (RB Leipzig) - 7.30 rating

The first of four RB Leipzig representatives to make this side is nominally a left-back by trade. Marcel Halstenberg has, however, transitioned impressively to act as the third centre-back in Julian Nagelsmann's three-man defensive setup and makes this team on account of his commendable WhoScored rating (7.30) this season. The German's three goals and two assists contributed towards his inclusion, so too do averages of 1.9 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 2.1 clearances per game.

Centre-back: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) - 7.23 rating

Partnering Halstenberg at the back is RB Leipzig teammate Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman is one of the most sought after defenders on the continent and for good reason as he features at the heart of the defence with a WhoScored rating of 7.23. A pass success rate of 88.8% from 72.7 passes per game, the latter among the top 10 in the Bundesliga, is one of the many reasons Upamecano makes the cut.

Left-back: Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 7.54 rating

The first of four players for defending champions Bayern Munich, few expected Alphonso Davies to feature so prominently this season, yet the Canadian star has excelled from left-back, coming on as one of the finest full-backs in the world. Barrelling forward to help stretch opponents, Davies has one goal and four assists to his name, while 64 successful dribbles is more than any other teenager in Europe's top five leagues to help yield a WhoScored ratin of 7.54.

Right midfield: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 7.60 rating

The third best rated player in the Bundesliga this season, with a WhoScored rating of 7.60, Serge Gnabry's finest displays have been saved for the Champions League, notably in London, but in Germany; the young winger has been a key player for the league leaders. Indeed, Gnabry has chipped in with 11 goals and nine assists for Bayern, while his seven WhoScored man of the match awards is the second best in Germany's top tier this term.

Central midfield: Thiago (Bayern Munich) - 7.54 rating

Continuing the Bayern trend, Thiago has been a key man in the middle of the park for the German outfit as is come to be expected of the 29-year-old. While he has just three league goals to his name, Thiago ranks among the Bundesliga's top 10 players for passes per game (76.6) and pass success rate (90.2%) and routinely showcases his statistically calculated WhoScored strength of 'dribbling' with his dribble success rate (87%) better than any other Bundesliga player this term.

Central midfield: Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) - 7.52 rating

Featuring alongside Thiago in midfield is RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman has been a revelation for the German outfit on the back of his summer arrival from PSG with his 12 assists the third best return in the Bundesliga. Nkunku ranks first for the most assists (4) and key passes (9) in a single top-flight German match this season, both of which came in RB Leipzig's resounding 5-0 win over Schalke, and contributed towards his average rating of 7.52.

Left midfield: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.90 rating

The sole Borussia Dortmund representative is, of course, Jadon Sancho. The 20-year-old has been linked with a return to England this summer, with Manchester United leading the race for the England international, as Sancho continues to shine in Germany. The youngster is the only player to register double figure for both goals (14) and assists (15) in the Bundesliga this season, the latter return the second best return in the German top-flight, with a WhoScored rating of 7.90 the second highest in the Bundesliga.

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 8.16 rating

Our Bundesliga player of the season so far, and final Bayern representative, is hotshot striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish hitman has scored more goals (25) than any other Bundesliga player this season, and two fewer than relegation candidates Fortuna Duesseldorf and Werder Bremen. Those 25 goals have come from an average of 4.3 shots per game, that more than any other player, while an additional three assists has helped Lewandowski to a WhoScored rating of 8.16.

Striker: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) - 7.58 rating

What could have been for Bayern... Timo Werner is the final player in the Bundesliga team of the season so far with his 21 goals and seven assists helping the Germany international to a WhoScored rating of 7.58. Bayern supposedly dallied over their push to sign Werner last summer and it resulted in the forward penning a new deal with RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old is now one of the most coveted strikers on the continent as he rounds off this XI.
