Euro-Star: Towering Tobias Lauritsen the focus after match-winning display

Euro-Star returns after the international break to take a look at the highest rated performer across Europe from the weekend’s top-flight action, and this week our X followers have chosen Sparta Rotterdam striker Tobias Lauritsen as the focus.

Also up for selection this week were Felippe Cardoso, Robin Zentner and Tim Kleindeist, but it was the Norwegian Lauritsen who prevailed with 31.8% of the vote.

Sparta Rotterdam are in search of a third top-half finish in the last four seasons in the Eredivisie, having finished sixth last term, and eighth in 2020/21. Jeroen Rijsdijk’s men took a huge step towards that goal on Saturday, when they put four past Fortuna Sittard, to leapfrog them in the Eredivisie table on goal difference.

Crucial to that victory for De Kasteelheren was Tobias Lauritsen, who had a direct hand in three of his side’s four goals. The 6ft4in striker doubled the hosts’ lead shortly after half-time, before netting again 30 minutes later to put all three points truly out of reach for Fortuna Sittard.

The Norwegian found the net with two of six attempts on goal, and would then go on to provide the assist for Camiel Neghli in the first minute of stoppage time to round off a sensational all-action performance, and earn himself a perfect WhoScored rating of 10.0 - the sixth by a player in the Eredivisie this season.

That 91st-minute assist came from one of two key passes made by Lauritsen, and brought his tally of direct goal involvements this term to 17 (9 goals, 8 assists). Along with his contributions in front of goal, Lauritsen also helped out defensively, as he made one tackle, one interception, two clearances and a whopping 13 aerial wins.

Lauritsen’s perfect-rated display saw him earn his seventh WhoScored Player of the Match award of the campaign. Vangelis Pavlidis (10) and Joey Veerman (8) are the only Eredivisie players to have won more so far this term.

After the Norwegian went four matches without finding the net, supporters of the Netherlands’ oldest professional club will no doubt be relieved to see their number nine back among the goals as they aim to finish the season on a high.
