Vinicius leads Real Madrid trio in Champions League Team of the Tournament
With the Champions League done and dusted following Saturday's final, we take a look at the team of the tournament. Represented in the XI are stars from Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, PSG and Atletico Madrid.
Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.20
While he was unable to keep Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior out at Wembley on Saturday, Gregor Kobel was instrumental in Borussia Dortmund's progression to the Champions League final. The Swiss shotstopper made more saves (46) and kept more clean sheets (6) than any other goalkeeper in the competition on his way to a WhoScored rating of 7.20.
Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) - 7.07
The first of two Bayern Munich players in the best XI, Joshua Kimmich was solid for the German side, particularly when moved to right-back in the midst of their injury crisis. 70.3 passes per game ranked among the top 20 players in the competition, and he made the fourth most accurate long balls (51) to help return a WhoScored rating of 7.07.
Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.21
The second Dortmund representative, Mats Hummels shone at centre-back for the German giants to prove age is but a number. Hummels won possession in the defensive third more times (45) than any other player in Europe's elite club competition and ranked top for tackles (53), interceptions (25) and clearances (66) to secure his spot in the XI.
Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid) - 6.78
It's an all-German centre-back partnership with Antonio Rudiger the first of three representatives for Champions League winners Real Madrid. Rudiger was again vital for Carlo Ancelotti's side and was often in the right place at the right time to alleviate pressure on the Los Blancos backline as he made the fourth most clearances (34) to make the cut.
Joao Cancelo (Barcelona) - 7.61
Rounding off the defence, Joao Cancelo made the second most tackles (32) and second most interceptions (19) in the Champions League this season and was directly involved in three Barcelona goals, netting twice. In addition, Cancelo completed 29 dribbles prior to Barcelona's quarter-final exit, that more than any other defender and the fifth most overall.
While Ousmane Dembele was unable to help PSG to a spot in the Champions League final, it wasn't for want of trying. The Frenchman ranked among the top 10 players for key passes (23) and dribbles (23) in the competition, while two goals and one assist saw Dembele return a WhoScored rating of 7.12.
Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) - 7.63
No player registered more assists than Jude Bellingham (5) in the Champions League this season, with his fifth the most important as he turned provider for Vinicius Junior in Saturday's final win over Borussia Dortmund. 24 key passes was the sixth most in the competition, while seven big chances created was second as Bellingham ended a superb debut Real Madrid campaign with a WhoScored rating of 7.63.
Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) - 7.32
Linking up with Bellingham in the middle of the park is the second Bayern Munich representative in the side. Jamal Musiala completed 32 dribbles in the Champions League this season, that the fourth most, while the young German forward also scored two and assisted one to land a WhoScored rating of 7.32.
While Kylian Mbappe was unable to bow out from PSG with a Champions League winners' medal, the French forward was superb for the Parisian Powerhouse as evidenced by a WhoScored rating of 7.57. Mbappe created more clear-cut goalscoring opportunities (9) than any other player in the Champions League this season, and finished the campaign with the second most dribbles (36). No player scored more goals than the 25-year-old (8) to justify his inclusion.
Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) - 7.73
Only Julian Brandt (28) made more key passes than Antoine Griezmann (27) in the Champions League this season, with the Atletico man making the cut with a WhoScored rating of 7.73. Griezmann netted six times on Atletico's way to the quarter-finals, and laid on an additional assist, with the 33-year-old excellent once more.
Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) - 7.82
Saving the best until last, Vinicius Junior is the Champions League player of the tournament having earned a WhoScored rating of 7.82. The Real Madrid star was directly involved in 10 goals, scoring six, on Los Blancos' way to another Champions League crown. Vinicius completed more dribbles (37) than any othe player in the competition to cap a fine European campaign.
