REVEALED: Messi and Ronaldo absent from European Team of the Season so far

We have already revealed the best WhoScored rated summer signings XI from Europe's top five leagues and now it is time to run through the best rated XI overall. Neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi make the XI, with the latter missing a large chuck of Barcelona's games through injury and the former yet to hit top form.

However, there is still space for a number of big name players who have made fast starts to the 2019/20 campaign, with additional information about their Football INDEX share prices. 

Goalkeeper: Salvatore Sirigu (Torino) - 7.29 rating

Former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has been immense ever since joining Torino and his start to this season has proved no exception. The fact the 32-year-old is the highest WhoScored rated goalkeeper in Europe's top five leagues is testament to that. Only four goalkeepers have made more saves than Sirigu this season (32), which includes a penalty stop.

Right-back: Ricardo Pereira (Leicester) - 7.51 rating

Juventus were linked with Ricardo Pereira in the summer before eventually signing Danilo from Manchester City but Leicester can expect interest in their star right-back at the end of the season. Pereira has picked up from where he left off last season for the Foxes and is helping Brendan Rodgers' side push for a top four finish in the Premier League.

Pereira has two goals in eight league appearances for Leicester this season, while only two players have made more tackles than the Portugal international (35) in Europe's top five leagues.

Centre-back: Joel Matip (Liverpool) - 7.62 rating

Virgil van Dijk has rightly taken all of the plaudits for Liverpool's defensive displays in the last 12 months but Joel Matip has quietly developed into one of the best defenders in the league this season. Jurgen Klopp has made a point to praise the 28-year-old for his performances and he features in our best rated XI.

While Matip may not look a compotent ball-carrier, Liverpool supporters have become acustomed to the odd bursts forward from their towering centre-back. He does still, however, use his physical assets to his advantage, winning more aerial duels per game (6) than any other defender in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Centre-back: Willy Boly (Wolves) - 7.47 rating

Wolves made a slow start to the season, downed by a hectic European schedule, but are finally returning to their best form after beating Manchester City 2-0 away from home last weekend.

While some of their players, like Ruben Neves, have struggled to rediscover the same form they showed last season, Willy Boly has actually taken his performances to a new level this term. Boly averaged 4.8 clearances per league game last term but that figure is up to 7.1 this term, which is a return only two player can better in the Premier League.

Left-back: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.35 rating

Achraf Hakimi has filled in where needed for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, which has seen the Real Madrid loanee split his time at full-back and even slightly further forward of late. While some players would struggle to adjust to different positions and roles, the 20-year-old has been immense where ever he has played.

Hakimi has two goals and one assist in seven league appearances this season and picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award in Dortmund's final league game before the international break. Hakimi has impressively also completed 20 of the 25 dribbles he has attempted in the league this term.

Left wing: Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo) - 7.98 rating

Domenico Berardi was once linked with a big money move to Juventus after scoring 29 league goals across two league seasons from 2013 to 2015 but his career has stagnated since then. After four relatively low key seasons, Berardi has shown signs this season that he is finally rediscovering his best form.

The 25-year-old has scored five goals in five league matches for Sassuolo so far this season, which includes a hat-trick in his first appearance of the season. Berardi has also registered two assists in that time, already surpassing his total goal contributions from the 2017/18 campaign (6).

Central midfield: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) - 8.05 rating

Kevin De Bruyne started the season like a steam-train, eager to make up for lost time having missed almost the entirity of the 2018/19 campaign through injury. De Bruyne is typically sidelined at the moment and Pep Guardiola will be desperate to welcome the Belgium international back, as City are already eight points behind league leaders Liverpool.

De Bruyne has registered at least three more assists than any other player in Europe's top five leagues this season (8). He averages the most key passes per game (4.1) and has created the most clear-cut goalscoring chances on the continent (10) so far this season. The 28-year-old should be more than capable of setting a new record for the total number of assists in a single Premier League campaign if he can stay injury free.

Central midfield: Luis Alberto (Lazio) - 7.79 rating

After registering double figures for goals (11) and assists (14) in the 20117/18 campaign, last season was a huge disappointment for Luis Alberto. However, the Spaniard appears back to his best for Lazio this term and has already matched his tally for assists from the entireity of last term (five). Furterhmore, no player has completed more through balls than Alberto (four) in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Left wing: Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain) - 8.06 rating

Neymar's gradually detoriating relationship with Paris Saint-Germain has made it easy to forget simply how good he has been on the pitch for the club. The problem over the last two years has been getting him out playing on a regular basis.

The Brazilian, who won his 100th international cap in midweek, was not called upon at the start of the season after missing out on a return to Barcelona but has provided decisive performances for Thomas Tuchel's side since then.

Neymar has scored in four of his first five league appearances, including in three 1-0 wins,  and has picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award on three occasions in that time. Not only that, but the 27-year-old averages more dribbles completed per game (4.8) than any other player in Europe's top five leagues.

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 8.28 rating

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi usually steam ahead in the race to finish the season as the top scorer in Europe's top five leagues but Robert Lewandowski has given himself a great chance to claim that honour. Lewandowski is the only player to reach double figures for league goals this season and has netted at least three more times than any other player (11).

The Bayern Munich striker has remarkably scored in every single league appearance this season and is already halfway to matching his total from last season, with just seven games played.

Striker: Islam Slimani (Monaco) - 8.09 rating

Islam Slimani has been a revelation for Monaco this season just as it seemed like his time playing for one of Europe's biggest clubs was coming to an end. After a failed stint at Leicester, Slimani is back with a bang in France and is the highest WhoScored rated summer signing in Europe's top five leagues at present.

The 31-year-old has remarkably played a direct hand in nine goals in six league appearances for Monaco this season (four goals, five assists). Slimani avergaes a goal or an assist every 59.6 minutes of playing time in Ligue 1 this term, while the Algeria international has impressively also ranks second for the most clear-cut goalscoring chances on the continent (7).
