Guimaraes sparkles alongside Leicester trio in Premier League Team of the Week

 

Newcastle and Leicester earned big wins over Arsenal and Watford, respectively, and the pair are the dominant sides in the Premier League team of the week with three players each. Meanwhile, Tottenham secured a massive three points in their bid to finish in the top four and are represented in the best XI, as are West Ham, Brighton and Manchester City. 

 

Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham) - 8.38 

 

West Ham's 2-2 draw with Manchester City blew the title race open once more with City at the time of writing just four points clear of Liverpool having played a game more. Liverpool fans have Lukasz Fabianski to thank for ensuring the title race potentially goes to the last day with the Pole making seven saves, including a late penalty stop to deny Riyad Mahrez, to secure his spot in the team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 8.38. 

 

Emil Krafth (Newcastle) - 7.12 

 

Three Newcastle players make the best XI after their 2-0 win over Arsenal on Monday night. Emil Krafth was solid at right-back in the home victory as he made two clearances, one tackle and one interception, which saw the Swede return a WhoScored rating of 7.12. 

 

Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham) - 7.60 

 

Tottenham earned a massive 1-0 win over Burnley on Sunday afternoon as Harry Kane tucked past Nick Pope from 12 yards on the stroke of half time. Spurs were made to work hard for all the spoils on home turf with Davinson Sanchez putting in an assured display against the Clarets. Stepping in for the injured Cristian Romero at the back, Sanchez made three clearances, two tackles and one interception in a clean-sheet attaining performance, and found a teammate with 92.3% from 91 passes, to make the team with a WhoScored rating of 7.60. 

 

Marc Cucurella (Brighton) - 7.64 

 

After a superb display against Manchester United last weekend, Marc Cucurella earned a spot in the best XI for the second gameweek running following a solid performance in Brighton's 1-1 draw with Leeds. While the Spaniard was unable to prevent a late Leeds equaliser, Cucurella still managed four clearances, three tackles and three interceptions to join Sanchez at the heart of the defence with a WhoScored rating of 7.64. 

 

Matt Targett (Newcastle) - 7.76 

 

Rounding off the defence is the second Newcastle player in the side. Matt Targett earned a WhoScored rating of 7.76 in Monday's 2-0 win over Arsenal with the Gunners struggling to get the better of the left-back at St. James' Park. Indeed, Targett made three clearances, two tackles and two interceptions to nail down a spot in the side. 

 

James Maddison (Leicester) - 9.32 

 

With a WhoScored rating of 9.32, James Maddison is the Premier League player of the week. Maddison had a direct hand in three of Leicester's five goals in their 5-1 win over Watford on Sunday, following up his first half goal with assists for Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes either side of half time. Those came from respective returns of two shots and three key passes, while an additional three successful dribbles capped a star man display.

Rodri (Manchester City) - 8.48 

 

Manchester City dropped two points at West Ham on Sunday, but Rodri still put in a man of the match performance at the London Stadium, returning a WhoScored rating of 8.48 in the process. The Spaniard provided the assist for Jack Grealish's goal shortly after the break, that coming from his only key pass, and won seven aerial duels in the eventual 2-2 draw with the Hammers.  

 

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) - 8.40 

 

Bruno Guimaraes earned his fourth WhoScored man of the match award for Newcastle in their 2-0 win over Arsenal on Monday night as the Brazilian bagged his fifth league goal for the Magpies. The 24-year-old found a way past Aaron Ramsdale with one of two efforts, while he didn't give the Gunners midfield a chance to settle, making three tackles and one interception to return a WhoScored rating of 8.40. 

 

Harvey Barnes (Leicester) - 9.01 

 

The second of three Leicester representatives in the Premier League team of the week, Harvey Barnes, like Maddison, had a direct hand in three of Leicester's five goals against Watford. Barnes netted a second half brace at Vicarage Road, and provided an assist for one of Vardy's two goals, those coming from respective returns of three shots and two key passes to land a WhoScored rating of 9.01. 

 

Jamie Vardy (Leicester) - 9.09 

 

Jamie Vardy followed up his brace against Norwich last week with two goals at Watford on Sunday. Vardy netted goals number 13 and 14 at Watford from two of three shots, while one key pass and one tackle saw the Foxes hitman return a WhoScored rating of 9.09. 

 

Joao Pedro (Watford) - 7.95 

 

Joining Vardy on the frontline is the scorer of Watford's only goal in the Hornets' 5-1 loss to Leicester. Joao Pedro hit the back of the net with one of seven shots against the Foxes over the weekend, all the while completing four dribbles in the eventual defeat. In addition, Pedro made two tackles and one interception to complete the team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 7.95.
