Kane and Pogba feature among top 10 Euro 2020 performances
Now that Euro 2020 has come to a head, with Italy emerging victorious following their penalty shootout win over England, it's time to take stock of what has been a memorable tournament.
Having run through the team of the tournament already, next is a look at the best rated performances at Euro 2020.
Tomas Holes: Czech Republic (vs Netherlands) - 8.90
One of the upsets of the round of 16 games came in the Czech Republic's 2-0 win over the Netherlands. Granted, the Oranje were reduced to 10 men shortly after the break, but Jaroslav Silhavy's side capitalised impressively. Slavia Prague man Tomas Holes put the Czech's ahead midway through the second half at the Puskas Arena and then turned provider for Patrik Schick to confirm Czech Republic's spot in the quarter-finals at Euro 2020.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: Ukraine (vs Sweden) - 8.95
Hampden looked more like a battleground than a football pitch come full time when Ukraine took on Scotland in this last-16 showdown. In the end, Ukraine capitalised upon their numerical advantage to secure a spot in the quarter-finals, with Oleksandr Zinchenko playing a key role. The Manchester City star put Ukraine ahead midway through the first half and provided the late assist for Artem Dovbyk's 121st minute winner. In addition, the 24-year-old made four clearances, three tackles and one interception to return a WhoScored rating of 8.95.
Kevin De Bruyne: Belgium (vs Denmark) - 8.97
Had Denmark capitalised on their first half dominance, they would have claimed an early-tournament scalp against Belgium. Kevin De Bruyne, though, had other ideas. Recovering from a facial fracture in the Champions League final, Roberto Martinez called on his talisman for the second half in Copenhagen and De Bruyne didn't disappoint. He provided the assist for Thorgan Hazard 10 minutes into the second half and then got on the scoresheet with 20 minutes to play in an exceptional cameo performance. De Bruyne's showing against Denmark was the best rated sub appearance at Euro 2020 and the eighth best overall as he garnered a WhoScored rating of 8.97.
Robert Lewandowski: Poland (vs Sweden) - 8.99
Robert Lewandowski did all he could to fire Poland to the knockout stages of Euro 2020 as he scored three of their four goals this summer. Two of those came in their 3-2 group stage loss to Sweden, a result that saw them foot Group E with just one point from three matches. Nevertheless, despite the defeat, Lewandowski was excellent against Sweden, bagging a brace in Russia from two of five shots. The 32-year-old also won three aerial duels and completed three dribbles to contribute towards a WhoScored rating of 8.99.
Paul Pogba: France (vs Switzerland) - 9.04
Paul Pogba was one of six players to win multiple WhoScored man of the match awards at Euro 2020, the second of which came in France's penalty shootout defeat to Switzerland. The Manchester United man was unable to prevent world champions France from exiting the competition at the last-16 stage, but his only goal of the tournament, a stunning curling effort, came in the meeting with the Swiss. In addition, Pogba created five goalscoring chances and completed four dribbles, all the while finding a teammate with 92.3% of his 78 attempted passes, to help garner a WhoScored rating of 9.04.
Ferran Torres: Spain (vs Croatia) - 9.05
In what was arguably the game of the tournament, Ferran Torres put in a star man showing as Spain beat Croatia 5-3 after extra time in their last-16 showdown. The Manchester City youngster followed up his assist for Cesar Azpilicueta 12 minutes into the second half with a goal of his own with 13 minutes to play before his withdrawal two minutes from time. Torres' assist came from four key passes and he impressed off the ball, too, making two tackles and two interceptions in what was the fifth best rated performance of Euro 2020.
Kasper Schmeichel: Denmark (vs England) - 9.06
After going behind to Denmark at Wembley last week, England pressed for the goals that would take them to the Euro 2020 final. The issue was they came up against an inspired Kasper Schmeichel and it almost cost them. Schmeichel made nine saves in all in the semi-final, including a Harry Kane penalty stop, though Kane did score the rebound. Nevertheless, it was a performance that stood out for all the right reasons as Schmeichel landed a WhoScored rating of 9.06.
Lukas Hradecky: Finland (vs Denmark) - 9.18
In the standout display from the first round of games at Euro 2020, Lukas Hradecky played a blinder in Finland's first ever competitive tournament win. While the game was overshadowed by Christian Eriksen's collapse, the player thankfully on the path to recovery, Hradecky still put in a superb performance between the sticks as he made six saves in total, including a second half penalty stop to deny Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, to come away with the man of the match award in a game that saw him return a WhoScored rating of 9.18.
Harry Kane: England (vs Ukraine) - 9.30
Many saw England's meeting with Ukraine as a potential banana skin for the Three Lions, but they made light work of Andrei Shevchenko's side in Rome, romping to a 4-0 win at the Olimpico. Harry Kane set England on the path to victory early on with his second goal at Euro 2020 and he added his second five minutes into the second half, with his brace coming from four efforts on goal. On top of that, Kane won three aerials, created one goalscoring chance and completed one dribble to garner a WhoScored rating of 9.30.
Gareth Bale: Wales (vs Turkey) - 9.41
With a WhoScored rating of 9.41, Gareth Bale put in the best rated performance of Euro 2020 in Wales' 2-0 win over Turkey in the group stages. Despite missing a penalty for the Dragons in Baku, Bale was excellent in the victory, providing the assists for Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts to score. That brace of assists came from five clear-cut goalscoring chances, a record at the competition. Two interceptions, two dribbles and one tackle capped a memorable display from Bale as he carved Turkey apart.
