England boost as German star is ruled out of friendly

The German Football Association have announced Manuel Neuer has withdrawn from the squad through injury to hand England a huge boost ahead of their friendly on Wednesday.

Neuer, 30, would have started in goal for Germany’s clash with England in Dortmund in midweek but has now been replaced in the squad by Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

The Bayern Munich ace has been dealing with calf issues and a decision has been made to allow the goalkeeper to rest over the international break rather than aggravate the situation further and cause significant damage to his leg.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen is now expected to fill Neuer’s gloves against England and could even continue in goal when Germany continue their World Cup qualifying campaign against Azerbaijan four days later.

Staggeringly, in the last four Bundesliga campaigns no player has won possession in the defensive third than Neuer (342).
