Everton eye move for Manchester United defender

Everton are targeting a summer move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones, reports The Times.

Jones’ existing United deal is due to expire at the end of next season, but Jose Mourinho’s side have an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

The Red Devils are currently weighing up whether to hand Jones a new long-term deal but Everton are ready to test their resolve this summer.

With Mourinho looking to sign another centre-back at the end of the season, Jones’ future at the club is far from certain.

Allardyce was responsible for handing Jones his professional debut during his time at Blackburn nine years ago and now the former England manager wants to reunite with the 26-year-old at Goodison Park.

Jones has struggled to stay fit for prolonged periods since joining United in 2011 and he has so far failed to live up to his early promise.

Under Mourinho, United have a better win ratio in the Premier League when Jones has not started (62.1%) compared to when he has featured from the off (51.3%).
