Vicente Del Bosque has resigned as national team manager of Spain after eight years at the helm.
Spain were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Italy in the round of 16 preventing them from defending their third straight European Championship.
In his eight years in charge, Del Bosque led them to World Cup glory in 2010 and then successfully defended their European title in 2012, but Spain then crashed out of the group stages at the 2014 World Cup and followed that up with similar disappointed in France this summer.
“Without a doubt, I have no intention to remain as coach, but you have to be discreet,” Del Bosque told Spanish radio station RNE on Thursday night, via Yahoo.
“No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would be.
“I have handled this issue discreetly. But it is a decision that was taken in advance.”
Del Bosque finishes his time as Spain manager with a staggering win ratio of 78%. Spain were one of just two teams that failed to make a single change to their starting XI (Iceland were the other team).
