Man City's dynamic duo lead Premier League midweek best XI
This midweek team of the week from the Premier League features the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool after their impressive performances. Wolves, Brentford and Bournemouth are also represented in the XI.
David Raya had little of note to do in Brentford's impressive 2-0 win at Chelsea in midweek, but was on hand to make four saves in all to ensure victory and a clean sheet. For his role in ending the Bees' six-game winless run, the Spaniard kicks off the midweek best XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.44.
Pedro Porro (Tottenham) - 7.86
Tottenham fought back well to draw 2-2 with Manchester United on Thursday night, despite going in at the break 2-0 down. Pedro Porro kickstarted the comeback with an impressive hit 10 minutes after the restart, beating compatriot David De Gea with one of three shots. While caught out for Jadon Sancho's opener, Porro did what he could defensively, making three tackles, three clearances and two interceptions to land a WhoScored rating of 7.86.
Joel Matip scored his first league goal of the season in Liverpool's 2-1 win at West Ham on Wednesday night as the Reds earned just their fifth away league win of the campaign as they mount a late surge for a top-four finish. The Cameroonian centre-back was good value for his WhoScored rating of 8.35 as he won nine aerial duels and made four interceptions and four clearances to go with his goal in the hard-fought win at the London Stadium.
Cristian Romero (Tottenham) - 7.85
Partnering Matip at the heart of the defence is Tottenham's Cristian Romero. The Argentine may have been part of a backline that shipped two on Thursday night, yet Spurs would have been staring down yet another defeat without Romero's spirited display at the back as he made six tackles, four clearances, three interceptions and blocked three shots to yield a WhoScored rating of 7.85.
Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) - 7.45
Making the Premier League team of the week for the second gameweek running, Andrew Robertson rounds off the backline having returned a WhoScored rating of 7.45 at the London Stadium. The Scot provided his eighth league assist of the campaign in the capital, and it was for Matip's crucial winner midway through the second half of the Reds' 2-1 win at West Ham, that coming from one of three key passes.
Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth) - 8.52
Bournemouth opened a seven-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone with an excellent 1-0 win at south coast rivals Southampton on Thursday night. Marcus Tavernier was the star of the show at St. Mary's with a WhoScored rating of 8.52 having bagged the decisive goal shortly after the restart. Tavernier was a constant threat for the Saints backline, completing six dribbles to go with his goal, to secure his place in the XI.
Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) - 9.58
With a WhoScored rating of 9.58, Kevin De Bruyne is the Premier League player of the week following his man of the match display in Manchester City's potentially-title deciding 4-1 win over Arsenal. De Bruyne was directly involved in three of City's four goals, netting twice, as he got the better of Aaron Ramsdale with two of four shots. One of the Belgian's two key passes resulted in the assist for John Stones' header shortly before the break as De Bruyne put in another big performance in City's title pursuit.
Wolves now sit eight points clear of the relegation zone as they maintained their impressive home form on Tuesday night. Ruben Neves kept his cool to net from the spot in Wolves' 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in midweek to take a huge step towards Premier League safety. The 26-year-old was effective off the ball, too, as he made four tackles and four interceptions to help return a WhoScored rating of 8.77.
It's a familiar looking left flank from the midweek round of games as Joelinton, like Robertson, makes the best XI. The Brazilian earned a WhoScored rating of 8.07 in Newcastle's superb 4-1 win at relegation threatened Everton. Joelinton doubled Newcastle's advantage with his sixth league goal of the season in the 72nd minute at Goodison Park, getting the better of Jordan Pickford with one of two shots to help book his place in the XI.
Erling Haaland (Manchester City) - 9.55
Erling Haaland netted his 33rd league goal of the season in the dying embers of Manchester City's 4-1 win over Arsenal on Wednesday night, writing his name into the history books in the process. While so often one to get on the end of chances, the Norwegian was actually City's creator-in-chief against the Gunners, returning two assists, both of which were for De Bruyne to score as he features with a WhoScored rating of 9.55.
Callum Wilson (Newcastle) - 8.57
The second Newcastle player in the side joins Haaland on the frontline. Callum Wilson scored goals 12 and 13 for the season at Goodison Park, beating Pickford with two of four shots to help fire the Magpies to three crucial points in their push for a top-four finish. An additional tackle and successful dribble meant Wilson was well worth his WhoScored rating of 8.57.
