Two Real Madrid regulars make LaLiga team of the month

Goalkeeper: Rui Silva (Granada) – 7.18 rating

Granada ended September second having gone through the month unbeaten, winning four of five matches. They conceded just the once with their biggest win coming against defending champions Barcelona, who they beat 2-0. Goalkeeper Rui Silva is the first of two Granada players to make the cut having made the third most saves (14) and kept more clean sheets (4) than any other goalkeeper to return a WhoScored rating of 7.18.

Right-back: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) – 7.34 rating

Registering more assists (3) than any other LaLiga player, Dani Carvajal impressed for Real Madrid in September. Indeed, the Spaniard returned a WhoScored rating of 7.34 last month, with a stand out display coming in a man of the match performance in their hard fought 1-0 win over Sevilla. 18 tackles and interceptions combined also ranked highly in Spain’s top tier as the Spaniard shone for Los Blancos.

Centre-back: Yeray Alvarez (Athletic Club) – 7.62 rating

3.7 interceptions per game was a fine return for Athletic Club centre-back Yeray Alvarez, and more than any other LaLiga player in September. While he made just three league appearances, Athletic Club kept a clean sheet in two of his three outings to continue their solid start to the campaign. Three aerial duels won per game was also a commendable figure for the centre-back, who did enough to gain a WhoScored rating of 7.62.

 Centre-back: German Sanchez (Granada) – 7.11 rating

The second Granada player to make the cut this month, it’s easy to see why German Sanchez features as the 32-year-old played in a defence that conceded just the once in September, and even that came in a match he didn’t start. Sanchez came away from the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.11 as returns of 20 clearances, 13 aerial duels won and four shots blocked, the latter the second most in the league last month, contributing to his notable score.

Left-back: Renan Lodi (Atletico Madrid) – 7.15 rating

Rounding off the defence with a WhoScored rating of 7.15, Renan Lodi has quickly made a starting spot his own in the Atletico Madrid defence. He ended August poorly, but upped his game in September to consolidate a spot in the LaLiga team of the month. He put in a star man performance in a 3-2 win over Eibar and was generally solid from left-back in Spain’s top tier.

Right midfield: Lucas Ocampos (Sevilla) – 7.38 rating

Sevilla ended a mixed September on a high, largely thanks to Lucas Ocampos and his man of the match performance at the weekend. The Argentine netted just his second league goal of the season in an entertaining 3-2 win over Real Sociedad to follow up his goal and assist in a 3-2 loss to Eibar the previous gameweek. 13 shots, eight successful dribbles and three key passes saw Ocampos make the LaLiga team of the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.38.

Central midfield: Martin Odegaard (Real Sociedad) – 7.88 rating

Martin Odegaard was seriously impressive for Real Sociedad in September and narrowly missed out on the LaLiga player of the month gong as he returned a WhoScored rating of 7.88. The Norwegian scored one and assisted two, with the latter coming from 17 key passes, that more than any other LaLiga player in September. It was another month for the promising midfielder to showcase his talents, with Odegaard the first of two La Real representatives.

Central midfield: Santi Cazorla (Villarreal) – 7.61 rating

Only Odegaard created more goalscoring chances than Santi Cazorla (15) in LaLiga last month, which resulted in two assists for the Villarreal star. With three goals to his name, he was one of three LaLiga stars to have a direct hand in five league goals in September, with one of Cazorla’s strikes a sumptuous hit in a 2-1 loss at Barcelona. All in all, the pint-sized creator landed a WhoScored rating of 7.61 to partner Odegaard in midfield.

Left midfield: Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad) – 7.88 rating

Like Real Sociedad teammate Odegaard, Mikel Oyarzabal ended September with an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.88 as he too came perilously close to landing the player of the month gong. The Spaniard was one of three players to have a direct hand in five league goals in September having netted three times, as the 22-year-old secured two WhoScored man of the match awards in wins over Espanyol and Alaves to cap another fine month.

Striker: Gerard Moreno (Villarreal) – 7.91 rating

Pipping the Real Sociedad pair to the individual award, Gerard Moreno is our LaLiga player of the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.91. The Villarreal star scored more goals (4) than any other player in LaLiga in September, while 15 shots and 12 key passes both ranked among the top five players for each category in the Spanish top-flight as Moreno continued his blistering start to the campaign.

Striker: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) – 7.48 rating

Rounding off the XI is the second Real Madrid player to feature in the side. Three of Karim Benzema’s five league goals this season were scored in September, which included a fine brace in a 3-2 win over Levante, that performance alone enough to land the WhoScored man of the match gong, his third such award of the campaign. The Frenchman bagged a clutch goal in the 1-0 win over Sevilla as Benzema made the XI alongside Moreno with a WhoScored rating of 7.48.
