Bundesliga round-up: Gomez twice strikes the button to earn man of the match gong

There was little change at the summit of the Bundesliga after gameweek three, but at the bottom, VfB Stuttgart earned a valuable point to move them away from the foot of the table. Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke surprisingly occupy the bottom two spots in Germany’s top tier, with the pair now one point behind Stuttgart following their entertaining 3-3 draw with Freiburg.

Mario Gomez was the hero of the day for Stuttgart, with the experienced forward bagging a brace in the aforementioned stalemate. Gomez scored with two of his four shots on goal and he led the line impressively as he won five aerial duels. Two further tackles saw him defend impressively from the front as the 33-year-old came away with the man of the match award with a WhoScored rating of 8.72.

On the opposing side, Jerome Gondorf also netted twice in Freiburg’s 3-3 draw with VfB Stuttgart, those his first and second goals of the Bundesliga campaign. The 30-year-old did well to win three aerial duels in the draw and chipped with returns of one key pass, one interception and one tackle to help return a WhoScored rating of 8.65.

Rounding off the top three best performers is Mainz wideman Karim Onisiwo, who churned out a man of the match display in their 2-1 win over Augsburg. Like Gondorf, Onisiwo earned a WhoScored rating of 8.65, despite not having a direct hand in a goal in the victory. It wasn’t for want of trying, though, with the Austrian mustering four shots and three key passes, while the 26-year-old worked tirelessly off the ball as he made six tackles and two interceptions to podium in the Bundesliga this week.

Taking the unwanted gong for worst-rated player of the week is Bayer Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi. The Winger was a second half introduction in the 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich, but lasted just seven minutes before receiving his marching orders at the Allianz Arena. The wideman made a horrendous challenge on Rafinha and was awarded a straight red for his troubles, which meant he ended the match with a WhoScored rating of just 4.94.
